Western States Art Federation (WESTAF) made it to Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design for a tour and special convening with the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)! Leaders' voices represented from Humanities councils across the Pacific included Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and our islands of Hawai‘i. NEH Chair Shelly C. Lowe and NEA Chair María Rosario Jackson joined WESTAF's Board Chair Teniqua Broughton and Christian Gaines with their colleagues for the meaningful dialogue. This could provide empathetic support to low-income families, including to the 5.5 million children and families touched by the child welfare system. Our Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design staff had the special privilege of hosting the Māori Royal Family for a celebration of Mana Motuhake (Māori Independence). It was an honor to have his Majesty Kīngi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII, Te Makau Ariki Atawhai Paki, their daughter, Princess Puhi Ariki, and the All Kiingitanga delegation join us to conclude their time in Hawaiʻi as part of The Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture (FestPAC). Governor Josh Green and the First Lady were also in attendance for the evening along with Drs. Aaron J. Salā, PhD and C. Makanani Sala, PhD, to whom we are grateful for leading the charge across FestPAC with support from many #Hawaii partners. Josh Tatofi made a surprise appearance with some of Aoteroa’s favorite hits, along with Shangri La Artist-in-Residence Taimane Gardner, whose powerful ʻukulele driven sound can be enjoyed in the video below. We are proud to announce the launch of "Encoding Equity in Clinical Research & Practice: Rethinking Race in Clinical Algorithms," an alliance led by the Council of Medical Specialty Societies with support from the Doris Duke Foundation. The alliance will bring together leaders in clinical medicine and research, technology, publishing and philanthropy to advance health equity, ensure patients affected by biased algorithms experience the best possible outcomes and change how race is considered in research design, implementation and monitoring of clinical algorithms. Bringing diverse stakeholders together to effect change is exhilarating. Sindy Escobar Alvarez opened today’s "Together to Catalyze Change for Racial Equity in Clinical Algorithms" at the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, where a multidisciplinary group of healthcare leaders is gathered to revisit the use of race in clinical algorithms, share progress in the field, understand how artificial intelligence and machine learning might mitigate harm and build trust through scientific reevaluation. #EquityinEquations Photos by: CapitolHillPhoto.com
