Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) Announces That It Has Pioneered Collective Licensing Solution for Content Usage in Internal #AI Systems. https://bit.ly/465qhDI

As seen in Publishers Weekly today by Edward Nawotka: Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) has launched a collective licensing solution for the internal use of copyrighted materials in AI systems. The new service, which became available July 1, is an addition to CCC's existing Annual Copyright Licenses (ACL) service and aims to provide a streamlined method for companies to access a consistent set of rights across multiple rightsholders, while ensuring compensation for content creators. "It is possible to be pro-AI and pro-copyright, and to couple AI with respect for creators,” said Tracey Armstrong, president and CEO of CCC. She added, "Responsible AI starts with licensing, and in developing this license, CCC enables users to efficiently gain access to a consistent set of rights across many rightsholders and returns royalties to rightsholders as compensation for use of their works." Lauren McLeod Tulloch Tulloch, VP and managing director of CCC, clarified that the license covers internal, not public, use of the copyrighted materials. “Use cases could include people doing article summarization, literature review, and market surveillance,” Tulloch said. Responsible AI starts with licensing. CCC's pro-copyright, pro-AI approach is to develop practical licensing solutions. Today, after more than a year of collaboration with rightsholders and licensees, we announce a voluntary, non-exclusive collective license for the internal use of copyrighted materials in AI systems. Copyrighted material is the foundation of culture, science and art, and a driving force of innovation and growth in economies globally. While there have been countless technology advancements that implicate copyright, time has proven that licensing works. Today marks another milestone in the licensing journey.

Fast-paced organizations that rely on and invest heavily in R&D should not only regard published content as the heart of innovation, but also possess a deep appreciation of the system of copyright protecting this intellectual property. After all, many kinds of published literature, including news, blogs, books, journals, and standards — including the organizations’ own materials — are protected by copyright laws that place limits on how content can be used by others without the rightsholder’s permission. Success is dependent on collaboration, networking, and sharing information. Unfortunately, from growing startups to established global companies, we hear all the time from organizations whose teams are not fully aware of how copyright applies to the content they rely on to accomplish their respective goals. Without knowing what permissions are needed to reuse content — and how to obtain them if needed — these teams can put their entire organization at risk of copyright infringement. Learn how Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) has supported content users for decades by providing efficient, harmonized licensing solutions that cover their internal uses of content in our latest Velocity of Content blog post 👇 https://lnkd.in/eus9bBej

Employees consume and reuse copyrighted materials all day long. It’s just business. However, routine content exchanges such as sharing published reports, articles, and other information found on the Web, or using published content with AI systems, have copyright implications, which can expose companies to a greater risk of infringement. While you may know the basics of copyright, your colleagues and staff may not.
