About us

Founded in 1666 by Captain Robert Treat and his Connecticut Puritans, the City of Newark is America's third-oldest City, and New Jersey's largest municipality. During and after the American Revolution, it became a major center for leather production and then heavy industry. It was formally incorporated as a City in 1836, and continued to be an industrial, banking, and insurance center for the next 100 years. In the past 40 years, Newark has undergone a dynamic transformation, with its economy centered on high technology, industry, and communications, based on its role as a transportation hub -- home to railroads, superhighways, the Newark Seaport, and Newark Liberty International Airport. Cultural centers like the Newark Museum and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center offer visitors and residents world-class exhibitions and entertainment. The Prudential Center in the City's downtown is home to the New Jersey Devils NHL hockey team and hosts performers like Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, and the Ringling Brothers Circus. Its restaurants and eateries reflect the city's diversity and hospitality. Notable Newark natives include basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal, writer Philip Roth, singer Paul Simon, jazz musician Sarah Vaughan, poet and playwright Amiri Baraka, Sr., actress Queen Latifah, actor Michael B. Jordan, Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, and U.S. Congressman Peter Rodino. Today, Newark is transforming itself at the will of its united people. This transformation is the City's highest priority with groundbreaking initiatives in public safety, economic development, housing, and community engagement, while achieving fiscal stability. Together, these initiatives are transforming Newark into a City we can all believe in, and a model for the entire nation on just what a City should be for all of its residents, stakeholders, and visitors.

From Newark to Paris, the fight against homelessness knows no boundaries. Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Director of the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services Luis Ulerio attended a two-day international conference of worldwide mayors and municipal leaders to create solutions to the global homelessness crisis, in Paris. The conference highlighted the common challenges that cities face in dealing with the growing number of homeless residents. The meeting provided an opportunity to share best practices and innovative approaches developed by cities at a local level to facilitate the reception and integration of these people, while taking care to prevent competition between vulnerable groups. At the conference, Mayor Baraka served as a member on a panel discussion entitled “Migration: Mayors Working to Meet the Challenges of Reception,” with Mayor Hidalgo; Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan Pachon; Dakar, Senegal, Deputy Mayor Fambaye Ndoye; and Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas. Other panels discussed how to make welcoming migrants an opportunity for cities; acting locally in a context of national and international constrained frameworks; and mayoral commitment to addressing homelessness. Grateful to be invited to the International Homelessness Conference, where mayors and elected officials from around the world come together to find solutions. Let's make housing a right for all. 🏠💙 #InternationalConference #HousingForAll #GlobalSolutions Photos courtesy of Bloomberg Philanthropies Read the release at https://lnkd.in/gdQPgqyU

In June, we celebrate Men's Health Month. This month, we bring awareness to the health issues all men face. June is dedicated to enriching men's health and wellness through a broad spectrum of national screening and educational campaigns. This week, Mayor Baraka joined Mayor Adams, and a host of men's health speakers for a summit on men's health. The summit included health screenings and resources, panel discussions, and a space for men to be together and talk honestly about their health and well-being. We gotta make sure we're good on the inside, before we take care of the outside. You are not prisoner to your fate, circumstances, or environment. Your freedom and growth are determined by your willingness to move. Move towards healthy habits. Move towards healthy eating habits. Move towards a long and high-quality life.
