LaserWeeder: precision AI powered weed control in large-scale specialty crops
About us
Carbon Robotics, a Seattle-based agricultural robotics startup founded in 2018, builds innovative agricultural tools that empower farmers to operate more efficiently. Carbon Robotics’ revolutionary, high-precision laserweeding leverages sophisticated AI technology to improve crop quality, provide safer working conditions for farmers, reduce overall costs associated with modern farming, and create sustainable paths to regenerative and organic farming. The company launched its first product, the Autonomous LaserWeeder, in April 2021, raised a $27M Series B round in September 2021, and revealed its new LaserWeeder implement in February 2022. What’s it like working at Carbon Robotics? We are a no-nonsense team of passionate people with a bias for action. We know that our ability to execute on our ideas is what sets us apart. We do what we say we are going to do, externally and internally. We trust our people to act independently and make practical, real-world decisions.

Our upcoming symposium on AI for Washington State is organized around 3 themes where AI is already being employed: agriculture; climate change sustainability; and health and life sciences. We are thrilled to announce that the panel focused on AI in Agriculture will be moderated by Eric Horvitz, Chief Scientific Officer at Microsoft. Panelists include: Andre Coleman, Chief Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; Ananth Kalyanaraman, Director AgAID Institute and Professor at Washington State University; and Paul Mikesell, founder and CEO at Carbon Robotics. Meet Dennis Großhans, sharing his family's story of running a 1,000-hectare organic and conventional vegetable farm in #Germany. Specializing in #carrots, #onions, and #radishes, Dennis explains how #LaserWeeder has revolutionized their farming, reducing labor costs, increasing stand count, and limiting herbicide use. “We’re also getting the weeds earlier, which saves us nutrients, which the carrot obviously can use — the stand count is better for us.” – Dennis Großhans, Operations Manager at Gemüsebau Großhans

GL Estrup Gartneri a/s and Limsfjord danske rodfrugter a/s are pioneering farm innovation in Europe. As the first customer to order a LaserWeeder on the continent, they are revolutionizing their operations in Denmark, where they grow carrots, parsnips, parsley, and beetroot. Limsfjord danske rodfrugter a/s Manager, Niels Ege Nielsen shares his insights on modern farming and the impact of the LaserWeeder on their practices: "We invested in the machine simply because we could see the benefits of getting higher yields, having less people weeding, and using less herbicides." – Niels Ege Nielsen, Manager Limsfjord danske rodfrugter a/s

"Since farmers are too often forced to choose between using an immense amount of increasingly scarce (and costly, frankly) by-hand labor, chemical/herbicide sprays or the use of mechanical solutions that disrupt or even destroy topsoil, teams like Carbon’s know it won’t be long before these tactics begin losing sustainable lasting power." https://lnkd.in/eAHFdw3G

We've been busy in the fields this week! Cilantro harvest has begun, and the crop looks beautiful. We've also kept our new laser weeder busy this spring. This amazing technology offers us a chemical-free way to kill weeds with precision in our fields, resulting in improved soil health and better crop yields!
