Ask the CEO: I retired July 5, 2024, and I would like to return to work soon. Does the new law affect my returning back to work in the classroom? What is the new postretirement earnings limit? And what do I need to know? https://bit.ly/4bJ0cM6

Week 1 of the Intern Collective in the books! Christopher Ailman, Scott Chan, CFA, Geraldine Jimenez and team went all-out for the ~60 interns who joined in Sacramento and virtually to learn more about CalSTRS. Chris’ last day as CIO was Friday, and Scott became CIO on Monday — the lucky interns got to learn from them both. Brief background: A group of us dreamed up the Northern California Intern Collective this year as an informal network of institutional investors who volunteer to cross-educate each other’s interns, so they can get a wide view of the world of finance. Many of these students come from the member firms and the University of California campuses (UC Investments runs an outstanding UC Investments Academy) – they would not otherwise be exposed to the industry, so wouldn't know about the many interesting jobs here. Both Chris and Scott had a few words of wisdom for the interns that I thought were too good not to share: From Scott: (1) Identify who you are what you stand for -- what your values are -- and align that with your work (2) Choose your boss wisely. This person will introduce you to people and put you in situations where you can shine -- they will help grow you as an individual. From Chris: (3) When looking at jobs -- ask to walk across the trade floor where you want to work, so you can assess the company culture Chris also mentioned that CalSTRS finds one's college major less important; they are more focused on finding people who are curious, willing to research, and who will challenge themselves.
