Education is the most powerful tool to combat hate and prevent atrocities. As part of his #EducationtoEndHate initiative, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond delivered an inspiring closing keynote address at the summer professional development institute of the California Teachers Collaborative on Holocaust and Genocide Education. Superintendent Thurmond engaged nearly 150 educators from 51 districts who gathered to hear moving, firsthand accounts from survivors of the Rwandan genocide, Cambodian genocide, and the Holocaust. These dedicated teachers walked away with invaluable best practices, model curricula, and support for unit planning, all aimed at ensuring the powerful lessons of these past atrocities resonate with and educate the next generation of young leaders. Superintendent Thurmond also co-chairs the Governor’s Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education.
