This recent study reports that, despite advances in applied instruments and surgical techniques, the incidence of iatrogenic durotomies caused by traditional techniques remains significant. The ultrasonic BoneScalpel bone-cutting tool has been shown to improve speed and reduce complications in laminectomies in the cervical and thoracic spine when compared to common methods utilizing high-speed burr, punch forceps, or rongeurs. This study sought to evaluate whether the use of the BoneScalpel in the lumbar spine would result in equivalent safety, efficacy, and improvement in patient-reported outcomes when compared to traditional methods of laminectomy. A comprehensive cadaver lab plus didactic sessions, the Cleveland Spine Review Event is an exciting course sponsored by Cleveland Clinic that emphasizes the fundamentals of spine surgery, particularly biomechanical considerations, and the decision-making process. Participants studied strategies for procedures including lumbar fixation, cervical, and thoracic techniques. For the second consecutive year, our team was happy to demonstrate the power of BoneScalpel® ultrasonic bone cutting device via 10 Nexus stations for 40 attendees and 30 faculty.
