Plants and people are our thing. We’re the largest succulent and cactus grower in the world.

About us

Nestled in the hills of north San Diego County, Altman Plants is home to over 1,025 unique varieties of cacti and succulents. In 1975, Altman Plants was simply a backyard hobby for Ken and Deena Altman. Their nurturing care and passion for each individual plant set them apart and quickly grew the business to the industry front-runner it is today. Since those humble beginnings, with the help of a team of renowned plant breeders and dedicated staff, Altman Plants is now one of the largest nurseries in the country and the largest succulent grower in the world. We strive to provide high-quality living treasures, for collectors and retailers alike.

It's not hard to spot the sizable peony-like flowers of the True Inspiration PP31,791 rose at a garden center. The 4" flowers, with their 45 to 50 petals, have a way of commanding attention. Part of our True Bloom Roses®️ brand, True Inspiration is a landscape rose growing to around 5' high and 4' wide and producing medium peppery-perfumed flowers all season along. Part hybrid tea & part shrub rose, the low-maintenance rose exhibits excellent disease resistance. #plantbreeding #horticulture #floriculture

Looking for an echeveria for a full ☀️ spot in the landscape or slope? Easy. Echeveria 'Sahara' PP27,514 is known for handling such assignments as well or better than pretty much any echeveria that we've seen. Also shows excellent cold resistance relative to other echeverias. Along with the weather resilience, this Altman Plants original hybrid shows enhanced resistance to diseases and powdery mildew compared to other echeverias. And those flowers, they sure are purty and pretty large. Also in the frame: Agave 'Kissho Kan', Agave celsii 'Nova' and a little bit of Echeveria 'Neon Breakers' PP21,406. #altmanplants #livingtreasures #succulents

Now that is a smile-loaded crew! Congratulations to Merchandiser Kerri Bell on her A-Team Service Award, which she received for exemplifying company core values of joy, unity, consistency, and excellence. Kerri was recognized for her efforts and commitment to excellence during important garden center walks in April with our retail partner. "Kerri offered to show up on her day off to give the team extra support. She also stayed later than her usual scheduled shift to help ensure all tasks were completed for the walk and offered to start earlier than her usual scheduled shifts so she could help polish stores up before the walk started," Regional Service Manager Jose Montes said. “Kerri’s positive attitude was a joy for everyone who got a chance to work with her during the walks.”

This is the gorgeous Altman Plants-bred True Sincerity PP34,289 rose in a team member's garden in Southern California. Part of our True Bloom Roses®️ brand, True Sincerity was bred to produce an abundance of vibrant flowers all season long while being easy to grow and care for — that goes as a container rose too. Like our other roses, True Sincerity had to prove its mettle in no-spray environments before graduating to become a garden center-worthy variety #plantbreeding #roses

A rosy gloom buster on a June Gloom morning at a retail partner garden center in Southern California. Our True Sincerity PP34,289 lights up patios and gardens with electric pink, orange, and yellow flair. This own-root floribunda shrub rose is part of our True Bloom Roses®️ collection, producing numerous 4" petal-packed flowers into fall atop a canvas of healthy green foliage. Factors such as light, temperature and age of the flower can have an effect on the colors. Displays an attractive compact form, growing on to around 3' x 3'. Excellent disease resistance. The American Rose Trials for Sustainability recognized True Sincerity as a 2023 A.R.T.S. Local Artist rose. #plantbreeding #roses #horticulture

A cool, damp spring morning in San Diego can't dampen the fiery color of our True Passion PP28,928 rose. It was seven years ago that the American Rose Trials for Sustainability named this beautifully resilient, easy-to-grow Altman Plants-bred introduction as part of its inaugural class of A.R.T.S. Master Roses. True Passion is one of the inaugural members of our True Bloom Roses®️ brand. Photo taken April 24 at a retail partner garden center. #plantbreeding #roses #horticulture #goteam
