Did you know we have a pre-academy recruit program? This program allows applicants who have completed the hiring process to train and learn with troopers prior to attending the academy. The pre-academy recruits are paid full recruit wages to do ride-a-longs, shadow specialty units, dispatch and evidence technicians, and work out daily to better prepare them for the upcoming academy. The pre-academy program significantly reduces the time it takes for applicants to get hired and start becoming immersed in the culture of AST. Alaska Wildlife Trooper Colonel Bernard Chastain has retired from the Alaska Department of Public Safety after 25 years serving Alaskans. Chastain began as a Fish and Wildlife Protection Trooper in 1998 and was appointed Director of the Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers in January 2023 where he led the division in accomplishing the mission of protecting Alaska’s natural resources through the enforcement of wildlife statutes and regulations. Colonel Chastain was committed to serving Alaskans through loyalty, compassion, integrity, and courage over his storied career with the department. We wish him well in retirement.
