About us
Each year, After School Matters provides life-changing after-school and summer program opportunities to nearly 19,000 Chicago high school teens. Our hands-on, project-based apprenticeship and internship programs – in the arts, communications and leadership, sports and STEM – allow teens to explore and develop their talents, while gaining critical skills for work, college and beyond. After School Matters full-time staff of approximately 85 supports the day-to-day operations and administration of the organization, as well as the provision of our signature programs across the city, while hundreds of individuals across Chicago work with us part-time as After School Matters instructors and program providers. We seek to serve our teens and achieve our mission by: • Advocating for teens and youth development • Building opportunities for teens through partnerships • Engaging teens in skills development for work and higher education • Showcasing teen accomplishments • Disseminating research and best practices about out-of-school time for teens

🌟 Celebrating our talented teens at ASM! 🎨🏁 15 young artists in our Digital Visionaries: NASCAR Graphic Design program @ Downtown Gallery 37 created a stunning 200 ft. scrim for NASCAR Chicago. Their design, paying homage to both Chicago and NASCAR history was featured at Butler Field for the race weekend. Additionally, these creative minds designed a NASCAR t-shirt for sale at the event, with a portion of proceeds benefiting ASM. Huge thanks to NASCAR for sponsoring this incredible initiative and providing our teens with such a remarkable opportunity. #teensMATTER

What's goin' on at ASM Summer Astronomy.... We have started viewing "Apollo 13" - by popular demand, as we start exploring the manned missions of early NASA. A pre demonstration on what happened on the XIII mission with scale models of the Saturn V stack. Answering questions, explaining the cause of the explosion and what they did was a good primer to the start of the movie. (Yea, I know the Escape Tower needs to be removed, but it was on tight.) We pause the movie often to explain scenes, answer raised hands and share observation & factoids. I have two solid student crews in the only fully dedicated Astronomy program in the city. This summer, After School Matters teens are collaborating with Related Midwest, Related Affordable Foundation, and the Related South Shore property to create an inspiring mural! 🌟 Teens, residents, and ASM instructor Roho Garcia came together to brainstorm themes and a main message, envisioning the mural reflecting feelings of peace, home, safety, love, belonging, positivity, and unity.
