Congratulations to our President's Performance Award honoree this week, Dallas EMT Bela Lima! Over the past year, she has served as an EMT and field training officer, earning a reputation among her coworkers as an outstanding and compassionate patient advocate. Bela fully embraces our mission and brings her unique enthusiasm to every shift. Before joining Acadian, Bela earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology, with a minor in French, from the University of Dallas. Of Brazilian descent, she is also fluent in Portuguese. Bela enjoys playing volleyball, dancing, and reading in her free time. She has ambitious plans for her future in healthcare, including attending PA school and becoming an EMS medical director. Throughout July, the National EMS Memorial Service Moving Honors is traveling across the United States in honor of 36 EMTs and paramedics lost in the line of duty last year. On Saturday, July 13, the Moving Honors procession stopped in Ruston, Louisiana, and Jackson, Mississippi, where Acadian Ambulance participated in the honor ceremonies. In Ruston, Acadian Ambulance joined Pafford Ambulance, Ruston Fire, Jackson Parish Ambulance, and Monticello (AR) Ambulance. North Louisiana Operations Manager Keisha Sparks and Critical Stress Incident Coordinator Jason Cole attended, and Keisha spoke on the memories of EMT John Crow and EMR Kymber Nezat. The procession then traveled to Jackson, Mississippi, where a memorial service was held at the Mississippi Capitol. The keynote speaker was Representative Bubba Carpenter, a 27-year career paramedic and flight medic. The AMR Central MS Honor Guard presented the colors. The Moving Honors culminates this weekend in Arlington, Virginia, with the 2024 National EMS Weekend of Honor. We continue to honor the legacy of John and Kymber, as well as all those lost in the line of duty across our country.

During the annual Mayor’s Armed Forces Commission (MAFC) Patriot Ball in late June, Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter and the MAFC presented a memorial proclamation in honor of the late Richard Zuschlag, chairman and CEO of Acadian Ambulance. Acadian Community Relations Supervisor Billy Vincent received the proclamation from Mayor Hunter during a special recognition at the Patriot’s Ball. The proclamation cited Richard's unwavering support of the MAFC and community of Lake Charles, and the lasting impact his support has made on enriching the lives of countless individuals through this generosity, leadership and compassion. “Although he was not a native Louisianan, Richard Zuschlag was the epitome of what it means to be a Louisianan,” said Mayor Nic Hunter. “He was one of the first people to call me after Hurricane Laura struck Lake Charles, ready to lend a helping hand in any way he could. He personally got on the phone with me and officials in Washington DC to plead our case for disaster aid, which we finally did receive. He was an incredible visionary, seeing such great potential in transforming a property that sat blighted for many years on Enterprise Blvd into a brand new Acadian Ambulance regional headquarters and National EMS Academy training campus.” “I was deeply honored to accept this proclamation on behalf of the Acadian Ambulance Family,” Billy said. “The employees of Acadian Ambulance are steadfast in their dedication to carrying the torch of public service that Richard so selflessly carried throughout his life. His legacy is one of commitment, compassion, and exemplary service, and we are committed to upholding these values. We will continue his mission of supporting valuable programs like those to which he devoted his time, talent, and financial resources. Richard led from the front with unwavering determination and was a profound inspiration to all those who had the privilege to know him. His leadership set a standard that we strive to meet each day, ensuring that his spirit of generosity and dedication to public service lives on through our actions.”
