In my personal opinion there are several aspect which we need to think and plan. Following the time tested project management fundamentals. Defining shorter goals for team and having frequent reviews on the progress & Risks. Learning and implementing the outcomes from reviews and retrospectives as quickly as possible. Not always milestone gets missed because of one team, several dependencies or communication gaps plays a critical role in it. Defining RACI matrix and following it is very critical. Maintaining and highlighting Risks & gaps and having a proper mitigation plan is very important aspect. All these aspects gets covered if one follow basic project management principles and Agile & SAFe methodologies to plan the work delivery.

Being "Transparent" solves most of the timeline issues. A good guide is to plan the roadmap and key dates which we are aiming to and if possible set the standup discussion around these goals so that the whole team is aligned on the main objective.

As a PM your most important job (other than communicating) is to remove hurdles. When expectations have been set on timelines, approach, and risks, monitoring and controlling the execution is how the project stays on track. Any variations must be communicated early and often - using a tracking tool helps keep all stakeholders aligned (yes, your project team is also a stakeholder). Additionally, simply monitoring progress is not sufficient - you must be able to control and influence the outcomes, which means anticipating risks, knowing how to mitigate them, and how to take action should a risk occur and become an issue.
