People behave in certain way for reasons. Could be from their upbring, the view of perceived power distance, the fear of consequences, the personal value and character. Whatever the reasons, proper and accurate diagnosis of the root causes allows for the suitable and effective approach.

In fostering support for the ineffective team member, I would restate the goals and objectives of the team and organization. Afterwards, the conversation drills down to the individual team members to address their critical role in achieving success for the unit / team involved. The goal is to create a culture of transparency, collaboration and support of each other as it pertains to achieving the overarching focus on sustainability. Periodic review of goals / accomplishments would also be set to continue support of all involved, a climate check, if you will.

Finally, regularly review the progress of the team member's communication skills. Schedule follow-up meetings to discuss advancements and any further challenges. Celebrate successes, no matter how small, to motivate continued effort and improvement. If progress is slower than expected, consider adjusting the goals or support strategies.
