Best route is connect with like minded people who serve the same people (client segment). -A solid value added offer will set you apart from your competition and earn favor among peers (Add value rather than leading with sales pitches). -The best possible connection are one whose clients both benefit in reciprocity. This seems to be a minute to learn lifetime to master concept though so act accordingly. -Follow up and warm calls are your friend.

Networking is less about playing golf, talking about your local sports club, or wining and dining. Its more about how one adds value to the network and the contacts, pass invaluable information that can help achieve outcomes / goals. Doing such things helps to increase the individual’s brand recall value and become a vital cog in the networking wheel

Something that helps me immensely is looking at the individual members of each group. Do they align with my company's values? Can I offer them something no one else can? If over 1/3 of the group is a no one my questions, I don't bother joining.

Each of us knows the most important events in our industry, such as the world trade fairs. The network is helpful for finding out about other events. As long as I don't just use my network to collect as many contacts as possible, it brings me real added value. In my experience, I personally only have time to FULLY engage and maximize thier/my ROI with 3-5 organizations at a time. One tool I use is to color code my calendar and re-evaluate my contacts every 6 months. By calculating the hours spent at each activity monthly, I get a wholeistic view of where my focus has been. This allows me to adjust as needed. I also plan ahead how often I want to engage and how much time to devote. Before accepting an assignment or invitation, I review my goals and full calendar. This allows me to say "not at this time" and make a recommendation that serves them better.
