The Foundational knowledge about the systems such as what can be different configurations of them, power and performance requirement with different applications, basics of systems networking protocols and types of connections will help one to not only troubleshoot and optimize the resources but when it comes to systems management a person can handle the critical situation better if the foundation is clear. In an interview one might not know correct answer but with right foundational knowledge he/she can triage and handle the situation with technical expertise in right direction.

Knowing basics and having clear knowledge and concept on the topics. Also not grasping all the area which might cause confusion. Pushing for the points you already have knowledge on and having more exposure on each specific topic. in short if you start some learning dive deep into it.

Knowing the basics is like knowing the foundation of the problem. Every problem begins with the basics. Before a computer hits a blue screen, there might be some basic faults to diagnose, windows corrupt because of Hard drive turn error, crash or virus. Troubleshooting of a system helps us to know the basic issues.

Having a good foundation of knowledge is key and should not be underestimated. Don't try and pull the wool over a SME's eyes if you don't know the answer. Explain how you would find the correct answer, knowing the correct resources to research will demonstrate your familiarity with supporting the product.

You'll want to make sure you know the fundamentals of systems management. You should know how servers work and how they interact with the other elements of the typical IT infrastructure, be it the traditional 3 tier setup or a hyperconverged setup, an on-prem or cloud setup, or a mix of something in-between (and if you don't know what all of those elements are, start there!)

Much learning and experience is gained from setting up lab systems to learn from but an even greater understanding is gained if you dogfood the products into your own home network to perform specific tasks. A learning lab that is pristine and not used in anger likely won't lead to as much gain.

It's hard to practice problems without real world experience. Bridge the gap by building a test lab on your own computer using Hyper-V (built into Windows) or another free hypervisor. Once setup, build and install OSes on some VMs, then network them together using typical enterprise elements (AD, DNS, DHCP). Play around, study, understand how it all works together. From there, either visit popular tech sites (Spiceworks, sysadmin sub on Reddit, etc.) to see the problems other sysadmin are facing, then try to replicate them in your lab. Invite a trusted friend over to try to break your lab (long as they tell you what they did if you're stumped!) Lastly: remember the fundamentals--there's a reason the OSI model exists!

Take your time to think through a question and make sure you understand what they are asking before you answer. Explain yourself slowly and calmly and check your assumptions as you work through the interview.
