Carefully review and study the vendor’s previous projects min. 10 years back, their commitment to delivery of material and skilled resources, do they have dedicated supervision during the life cycle of the project, their financial status and cash flow or availability, monitor their productivity periodically, ensure having enough work fronts for them, ensure having a clear split of responsibility matrix, clear communication and management on the logistics, set regular meeting and site walk/visits, etc., support on HSE, have plan B all the time, effective communication, etc.

In the long term some of the biggest risks with outsource vendors tend to circle around changes in the dominance relationship and/or complacency. All too often after 3/5/7 years the customer gets worried about deterioration in pricing and service levels. The service provider gets complacent and the business relationship managers are more interested in new clients than old clients. Making sure the original contract has sufficient provisions to keep the relationship fresh, or keeping the flexibility to re-tender if necessary.
