🚨 Solar Energy UK calls for 50GW of solar and 30GW of zero-carbon energy storage by 2030! 🚨 In their new manifesto, they urge the next government to publish a roadmap within 100 days to achieve this ambitious target. With current capacity at 20GW solar and 8GW storage, these goals align with the UK's 2035 target of 70GW solar. Overcoming planning inconsistencies and boosting investment are crucial factors. Utility-scale developments for solar and battery storage offer opportunities which the government could support, particularly via the creation of a national target for the technology. Solar Energy UK CEO Chris Hewett emphasised the need to set an energy storage target to facilitate new renewable energy generation technologies. Big news in the energy sector! 50Hertz, the German transmission system operator owned by Elia, has announced an ambitious plan to invest €20.7 billion in upgrading its grid infrastructure. This massive investment, over four times their previous five-year expenditure, will enhance overhead power lines, on- and offshore cables, substations, and other critical technologies. £1.8bn UK-Denmark interconnector launched at 1.4GW in key part of ‘North Sea super-grid’ National Grid has formally launched the 765km long land and #subsea #interconnector between #Britain and #Denmark with a capacity of 1.4GW. The £1.8bn #VikingLink was brought into initial #operation at 800MW just before the new year, but has this week been pushed to full capacity and is being hailed by #NationalGrid as “the next step in creating a #NorthSea super-grid”. Delivered in collaboration with Danish operator Energinet, it has taken 4M hours of work over five years to bring Viking Link to completion. The cable runs from Bicker Fen converter station in Lincolnshire to one in southern Jutland, Denmark. It enables Britain and Denmark to utilise each other’s #windpower, balancing out the peaks and troughs that each nation’s #grids will experience at different times of demand and levels of wind. Viking Link is National Grid’s sixth interconnector and the UK’s ninth. It will deliver £5.2bn in benefits to #UK #consumers and will be able to #power up to 2.5M homes according to National Grid. Since it commenced initial operations in December, it has already #transported 1,733GWh between the two countries. As the volume of UK #renewables increases, especially in the lead up to 2030, the UK is anticipated to become a net exporter of power, which makes interconnectors such as Viking Link even more valuable. Their ability to import clean energy to the UK at times of need is also beneficial to ensuring that bills for the UK consumer remain affordable. National Grid also has other international interconnectors in the pipeline such as #LionLink, which will connect to the #Netherlands, and Nautilus, which will connect to# Belgium. These will directly enable the #government’s target of 50GW of offshore wind by 2030. In its first year alone, Viking Link is expected to save 600,000t of #carbon emissions and National Grid’s interconnector fleet as a whole will have helped the UK to avoid around 100Mt of #carbonemissions by 2030, with 90% of the energy imported from zero carbon energy sources. Meanwhile, in the UK, National Grid is working on four #Scotland to #England interconnectors known as Eastern Green Link 1-4 to increase the capacity of the domestic grid as part of its Great Grid Upgrade. National Grid Group CEO John Pettigrew said: “In an ever-changing global energy market, the value that connections like Viking Link can provide to national energy security cannot be understated. “Over its lifespan, this record-breaking connection will deliver over five billion pounds in efficiencies for UK consumers, allow us to trade hundreds of gigawatts in surplus power and provide an indispensable tool in guaranteeing the continued reliability of our energy system." https://lnkd.in/ejysuYVf
