Study Group Director for External Affairs Ruth Arnold shares her reflections on how the UK higher education sector should approach communications and engagement with a new government. She also notes the vital contribution of international education to a shared mission of economic and social renewal: “Take the government’s stated top priority — economic growth. This is an area where universities not only have a powerful story to tell but a contribution to make. And if we put forward how we can be part of the future the country needs, the government will be listening. And we shouldn’t forget that UK higher education is not just a recipient of public funds but a growth sector and driver of economic impact in its own right. On this we are not supplicants but generators of national income and economic opportunity. International students bring £42 billion annually into the UK economy and cross subsidise the research, education and skills the government needs if it is to stand a chance of addressing our multiple challenges… When you ask the Department for Business and Trade about exports, higher education is clearly one area where the British offer has the attention of the world. We need to do all it takes through national and local cooperation to support this, address genuine challenges and ensure our global position is maintained.”

Each year on 23 June, International Women in Engineering Day celebrates the amazing work that women engineers around the world are doing to enrich lives and communities. “Since I was a little girl, I always wanted to understand how things work, and that’s what drew me to engineering. Today’s world is changing more rapidly than we are able to adapt, and when I look at the future of our planet and the future of our children, I feel more passionate and convinced than ever that engineering plays a critical role in anticipating and solving problems,” says Study Group Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Professor Elena Rodríguez Falcón FREng PFHEA FIET FCMI 🌈, who is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. “Engineering is fundamentally about how we make the world better every day to improve everyone’s lives. To solve global problems, we need diverse skills, and women can offer a unique and distinctive perspective to this process". As a former international student herself, Professor Elena Rodríguez Falcón FREng PFHEA FIET FCMI 🌈– who was instrumental in the creation of the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering – shares Study Group’s passion for developing and delivering impactful education initiatives and programmes worldwide. “There is still much more to be done, as we are still a very long way away from inspiring and attracting half of the population into the field of engineering,” says Elena. “If fifty percent of the population are women, fifty percent of engineers should be women. This is not just a missed opportunity, but a waste, as we risk missing out on the vast potential and novel insights that women can offer. It’s also a missed opportunity for women who perhaps have not realised how much of a fun, transformational, and good prospect a career in engineering can be.” At Study Group we’re proud to join in celebrating the achievements of women in engineering as they literally help shape the world of the future. #EnhancedByEngineering #INWED24

"When I started training in neurology as a junior doctor, I thought MND was the worst disease in medicine.” - Professor Dame Pamela Shaw When Professor Shaw first met patients with motor neurone disease (MND), little was known about the devastating condition. Since then, she has dedicated her career to improving the prospects for those living with MND: "It always seemed to happen to the nicest people, and it really made me feel like a bit of a useless doctor because we couldn’t do anything for patients or their families in those days and we knew nothing about what caused the condition. We had no treatments. "I thought it was a neglected condition and that in this era of modern medicine, we should really be trying to do something about this. It has been a long, slow process, but we are now making some positive progress,” As well as developing effective disease-modifying therapies, we’re also finding ways to improve the lives of patients living with MND. Sheffield researchers are working to make #MND history. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ejJmcMvu #MNDAwarenessDay #GlobalMNDAwarenessDay
