Making South Yorkshire safer and stronger

About us

Our mission is 'Making South Yorkshire safer and stronger' and our work to achieve this extends to far more than fighting fires. Our firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies including road traffic collisions, water rescues and many other types of ‘special service’ incidents. However, whilst our work responding to 999 calls is both well known and well valued by the public, far more of our contact with local people is actually through our varied and extensive work to prevent incidents from happening in the first place. To deliver this work, we employ more than 600 people, most of whom are firefighters. The majority of these are wholetime firefighters, which means they are available to attend emergency incidents 24 hours a day. We also employ on-call firefighters at some of our fire stations. Our firefighters are supported by teams of support staff who are skilled to provide a wide range of specialist services. This includes our community safety work and our responsibilities to enforce business fire safety laws. We also work with a network of volunteers to further extend the reach of our prevention work.

Updates

  • We recently hosted a collaboration workshop- bringing together colleagues from across the emergency services. We discussed our organisations’ varying approaches to collaboration programmes, barriers and opportunities for greater collaboration and techniques for measuring the outcomes of collaboration initiatives already in place. Specific workshop discussions were held around the Policing & Crime Act, plus service snapshots looking at how emergency services in South Yorkshire and Northumberland had approached things. Delegates from several different fire and rescue services attended the event at our training and development centre.

  • Staff across the service will mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings with a two minute silence at 10am today. The D-Day landings of 6 June 1944 was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Along with the associated airborne operations, it marked the beginning of the liberation of France and western Europe from Nazi occupation. By dawn on June 6, thousands of paratroopers and glider troops were already on the ground behind enemy lines, securing bridges and exit roads. The amphibious invasions began at 6:30 a.m. By day’s end, approximately 156,000 Allied troops had successfully stormed Normandy’s beaches. According to some estimates, more than 4,000 Allied troops lost their lives in the D-Day invasion, with thousands more wounded or missing. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue honours the bravery and sacrifice of all the men and women involved in this momentous undertaking.
