Today marks 40 years since Oil Spill Response Ltd (OSRL) was officially formed. Through the pioneering work of British Petroleum's (BP) Oil Spill Service Centre in Southampton, UK, OSRL was formed, and for 40 years, we've maintained a reliable capability for oil spill preparedness and response services. The organisation was born out of a BP initiative, starting out as a cooperative arrangement among oil companies with BP, Esso, Texaco, Petro-Canada, and Mobil as the first five companies to join. Shell enlisted a year later, shortly before a disaster would shake the oil industry. Over the last 40 years we have continued to grow and improve the services we provide to our Members. #osrl

🌟🌍 We've highlighted some of the ways we showcase our commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Through this initiative we've been exploring different ways to give something back to local communities through individual activities and team efforts. Here are some examples of what our teams have been doing: 🌱 Aberdeen Team's Environmental Effort: Our Aberdeen team recently tackled the removal of non-native invasive plants from the River Dee. They worked together to remove the Himalayan Balsam, a plant that crowds out native species and destabilises the riverbank. Their efforts were crucial in preserving the local ecosystem. 🏖️ Beach Clean-Up by Marketing and Communications Team: Last year, our team in Southampton braved the wind and rain to clean up Weston Shore. They collected several bags of litter, highlighting the importance of protecting our local environment. Their hard work set an example for others and strengthened team bonds. 📚 Education Initiative at Fair Oak Junior School: A team visited Fair Oak Junior School near our Southampton base to educate enthusiastic 10 and 11-year-olds about oil spills. They demonstrated equipment, techniques, and even got the kids involved in cleaning up a mock oil spill using vegetable oil. We hope this visit inspired future responders! 🛠️ Oil Spill Challenge at the Royal Norfolk Show: Laurie Buthfer from our response team joined Environmental Scientist students from the University of East Anglia at the Royal Norfolk Show. They demonstrated the 'Oil Spill Challenge' game, teaching children how to clean up an oil spill and understand its environmental impact. These initiatives show the dedication our teams have in making a positive influence. #osrleducation #osrl

As part of our Offline Response training for new responders, one of our teams took part in a final exercise at the end of April, concluding their course after 12 weeks of intensive training. The responders were given a fictional scenario involving a vessel collision resulting in a crude oil spill offshore near the coast of Portsmouth and Chichester, in the UK, that they would need to attend. By putting the skills they'd learned during their weeks of training into action, they created a plan that included a risk assessment and SCAT exercise to assess the level of oiling before selecting the suitable equipment. The team worked together to tackle the training exercise head-on and were able to practice the new techniques and expertise they'd developed. #osrltraining

Highlights from the 2024 SEOGS Conference in Suriname! 🌍 Our Principal Preparedness Solutions Advisor, Tristan Barston, presented at the Suriname Energy Oil and Gas Summit (SEOGS) 2024 earlier this month. His presentation, "Weathering the Storm: Decision Making Under Stress," focused on the importance of clear communication during crises and real-world strategies for effective crisis management. The conference had a strong element of hands-on skillset development. One of the most engaging activities was the Egg Drop Challenge, where delegates built protective cases for raw eggs, demonstrating the value of teamwork, adaptability, and concise communication in tackling unexpected challenges. Additionally, Tristan participated in a panel review of Suriname's updated National Oil Spill Contingency Plan. Alongside other experts, the panel discussed the plan's strengths, areas for improvement, and strategies for effective implementation to enhance oil spill preparedness. Key takeaways from the conference include the vital role of effective communication during emergencies, the importance of diverse perspectives and creativity in problem-solving, and the necessity of regularly updating contingency plans to ensure readiness. The SEOGS 2024 was a fantastic platform for knowledge exchange and networking. OSRL is excited to share our insights and contribute to collaborative learning in the region! #osrl #osrlevents #SEOGS2024 #CrisisManagement #Suriname

We recently ventured out into the local community to visit Fair Oak Junior School, near our Southampton base in the UK, to explain to a group of enthusiastic year six pupils what we do at Oil Spill Response. The day was spent explaining to the children about oil spills, how they occur, and what we can do to clean them up. We demonstrated some of the equipment and techniques we use and got the children involved by allowing them to attempt to clean up their own oil spill - using vegetable oil! We hope our visit has inspired a new wave of oil spill responders! #osrleducation https://lnkd.in/eWnj4JdJ

This month, OSRL ran a surface dispersant exercise in the south coast of the UK - did you spot our aircraft?! This comprehensive training event, held on the week of June 10th, was a major effort to enhance readiness and effectiveness in oil spill response. Dispersants are often used to respond to large offshore oil spills because they quickly break up the oil - helping protect shorelines and reduce environmental and economic risks. Using dispersants needs approval from local authorities and skilled trained responders to be effective. The exercise used fluorescein to simulate an offshore oil spill southeast of Isle of Wight, mobilising 25 responders, the 727 aircraft, UKCS Spotter aircraft, an offshore vessel, and water column monitoring capabilities. Service providers 2Excel Aviation Ltd and Williams Shipping also supported the exercise. Innovative technologies, including Marine Autonomous Systems from Jaia Robotics, RS Aqua Ltd, and Deep Trekker Inc., were trialed to monitor dispersant effectiveness. The Esri Hub was instrumental, offering real-time monitoring and situational awareness through live tracking and geo-processed data. Surface Dispersant Exercises like this are crucial for honing skills, testing procedures, and ensuring top-notch response capabilities for when a real emergency occurs 🚁🚢💧 #osrl #osrltraining #DispersantExercise
