Go behind the scenes of British film and television with our People Powered display 🎥 People Powered: Stories from Film and Screen is a free display featuring two partnership projects with young people and communities. The first display is all about Elstree Studios and aims to find new stories from those who worked behind the scenes and in front of the camera to create the shows and films we love in this renowned location. Elstree and Borehamwood's Film and TV studios has been home to famous actors, directors, and a legacy of British film and television hits – from Star Wars to The Crown. In addition to photographs from our Collection and work produced during workshops with students from Elstree Screen Arts Academy and the University of Hertfordshire, the display also includes contemporary portraiture by Marysa Dowling. Open from today 🎉 The Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award makes a welcome return for 2024. The prestigious competition showcases the very best in contemporary portrait painting and is open to everyone aged eighteen and over. Since its inception over 40 years ago, the competition has attracted over 40,000 entries from more than 100 countries and the exhibition has been seen by over 6 million people. The prize winners announced this week include Antony Williams who won first prize for his portrait Jacqueline with Still Life. Second prize was awarded to Isabella Watling for Zizi, and third prize was awarded to Catherine Chambers for Lying. Rebecca Orcutt has won the Young Artist Award for her self-portrait Before It’s Ruined (or an Unrealized Mean Side). You can visit this exhibition for FREE on Floor 2 of the Gallery. As we approach the announcement of the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award winner, we are excited to introduce you to our shortlisted artists… For the final artist we have Antony Williams for ‘Jacqueline with Still Life’. Painted in Williams’ preferred medium, egg tempera, his shortlisted portrait depicts Jacqueline, a model with whom Williams has worked with for a number of years. This engaging work combines the artist’s interest in still life with a portrait subject, painted in the artist’s studio.
