At National Gas, we are dedicated to making a significant impact on the journey towards net zero. As part of #NetZeroWeek, we wanted to share some of the innovative work we are doing to transition to a clean energy future. We are thrilled to highlight Lydia Vaughan, our Senior Hydrogen Analyst, whose work is instrumental in driving our net zero efforts 🌍 One of Lydia’s areas of focus is the delivery of Project Union, which aims to deliver a 100% hydrogen network for Great Britain. "The delivery of Project Union is the main focus of my role. Project Union will deliver a 100% hydrogen network for Great Britain, and I am currently supporting the delivery of this as we transition into the next phase, Front End Engineering Design (FEED), and accompanying supporting activities," she says. Her day to day role involves a diverse array of tasks, from engaging with stakeholders to developing funding documents for our innovative Project Union. "Often I am working on a variety of tasks at once and every day is different with a combination of written work and verbal engagement with project stakeholders. I regularly talk with our customers, both current and potential, to understand their future decarbonisation plans and how that coincides with the work we are undertaking with Project Union. I also work on developing the documents required to request funding from our regulator – Ofgem – for delivery of the project," she explains. The rapidly evolving hydrogen economy inspired Lydia to pursue a career in STEM. "Contributing to something that could make such a difference in reaching Net Zero by 2050, and the many interim decarbonisation targets, is a key reason that I was inspired to pursue this career," Lydia shares. When asked about what she enjoys most about her job, Lydia says, "I enjoy having the opportunity to work with like-minded individuals who are passionate about the route to net zero, and speaking with stakeholders both internally at National Gas, and externally with the customers we support on the gas transmission network." Her advice for others considering careers in energy: "My best advice would be to always pursue something that interests and excites you, and secondly, take all the opportunities you can to learn and see where your passion lies!" Lydia’s work exemplifies our commitment to innovative solutions and collaborative efforts in achieving net zero. We are proud of the strides we are making and the talented individuals driving these initiatives 🌱 #NetZero #HydrogenEconomy #WomenInSTEM #ProjectUnion

It’s the start of Net Zero Week and at National Gas we are committed to playing a pivotal role in the journey towards a clean energy future. Our CEO Jon Butterworth says “Achieving net zero is a necessity, not an option, and decarbonising our energy system is going to be a key part of it. The starting point for some is to say there is no long-term future for natural gas in this country. But molecules play an important role in our energy system and therefore Great Britain must transition from natural gas and replace it with a greener alternative. That’s why we are working to develop future technologies for our energy system, including hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage. Our latest Winter Review showed that there were some days last winter where power generation from gas peaked at over 60% of electricity. It’s fantastic to see the growth of renewable power sources and we will need molecules to complement the growth of renewables through flexible power solutions, whilst also fuelling industry which cannot electrify. This Net Zero Week I want to focus on, and celebrate, the partnership work that goes on behind the scenes across industry and government. We are collectively working towards a shared goal of a decarbonised energy system in Britain, whilst ensuring it is one which is secure and affordable. The journey has begun, and we are committed to our role in securing Britain’s energy – both today and into the future.”

🚶♂️10 Million Steps and Counting! 🚶♀️   Over 70 colleagues at National Gas completed a step challenge, collectively walking the length of the National Transmission network and raising funds for our charity partner Barnardo's.   The challenge was set up as a joint initiative between Barnardo's and wellbeing representatives in System Operations, who joined forces under the strapline ‘Stronger Together’. Chief Executive Jon Butterworth and System Operations Director Ian Radley were among those joining in with this fantastic initiative. Our enthusiastic participants shared photos of their step adventures, with the best ones receiving prizes at the recent System Operations town hall. The positive impact on wellbeing was palpable: 🌟 “I love how the NTS Ultimate Step Challenge has brought so many people together to achieve a common goal. We all felt a true sense of purpose and contributed meaningfully irrespective of individual abilities or geographic location.” 🌟 “The challenge has been brilliant! It got me out walking more and it was great to see everyone working together or competing against each other!” 🌟 “I’ve enjoyed the team element and striving together. The ‘Stronger Together’ title sums it up perfectly.” 🌟 “A bit of healthy competition is motivating, and this activity has really helped me.” Due to popular demand, a new step challenge is already underway – so keep an eye out 👀 #StrongerTogether #Wellbeing #Community

Congratulations to Gemma Parkes-Walley for being shortlisted for the ‘Returning Star’ award at the first ever Women in Utilities award ceremony, hosted by WUN - Womens Utilities Network and in association with Utility Week. 🏆   Gemma’s nomination recognises her exceptional return to work after maternity leave. She seamlessly transitioned back into a fast-paced project delivery environment, successfully managing construction projects while simultaneously taking on increased leadership responsibilities. And all with a new member of the family at home.   As Gemma said: “It’s fantastic to have been given the chance to attend this event and to raise the profile of the amazing women in our industry. There’s some really great things being done across all utility sectors and these types of awards really help raise the profile of gender diversity in our industry.”   The awards were presented by Dame Sarah Storey, British Paralympian and a multiple gold medallist, who shared in the excitement and positive energy for all the incredible women in the room.   With women still making up only a third of the workforce in energy and utilities, awards like these provide a unique platform for the utilities sector and businesses like ours to showcase their commitment to gender diversity and celebrate the great women working in our industry. #womeninutilitiesawards

Reflecting on this upcoming Armed Forces Day, we hear from Tom Mills MSyI M.ISRM, our Business Information Security Officer, as he shares his experience in the Army and what this day means to him. "For me, Armed Forces Day is a chance to remember my time in service and the positive impacts it has had on my life. It definitely helped shape who I am today. Time in the service provides a great and often safe space to make mistakes so you can learn and develop yourself, to push boundaries in a way not normally available to non-military personnel, and pursue personal and professional development every year. It honed my confidence to be able to read an audience and adopt a diplomatic persona when needed, whilst remaining professional in all other instances. I’ve learnt my limits and my strengths, and I know how best to utilise my skill set and knowledge within those ranges.   It's also a day to acknowledge my family who supported me through tough times and my transition from military life. I'm proud that National Gas values the important role our Armed Forces play in society and the contributions veterans bring to every walk of life."   Thank you to Tom for sharing his story with us. Among our National Gas workforce there are many others like Tom, and we take pride in supporting them.   Visit www.armedforcesday.org.uk to look for events happening in your area so you can show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community. #ArmedForcesDay

Did you know it’s been 55 years since the opening of Bacton Gas Terminal? 🎉 This month we proudly mark the 55th anniversary of the Bacton Gas Terminal opening, a cornerstone of our nation's energy infrastructure. Built and commissioned in 1968 and officially opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1969, Bacton has been instrumental in supplying up to one-third of the UK's gas supply, ensuring a continuous flow of energy every day for these 55 years. As we celebrate this milestone, we recognise Bacton's strategic importance and the efforts of the teams and suppliers on site who contribute every day to energy security. Bacton has a critical role today and into the future as we transition to new technologies including hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage. Here's to the continued innovation and success at Bacton Gas Terminal! 🚀 #BactonGasTerminal #EnergySecurity
