You may be a partner, but do you really have a seat at the table? We have been talking to several partners recently who feel that although they have a partner title, they don't really have a say in the business in which they work. For some this is not a problem if the firm is well-run, profitable, and has a positive and aspirational culture, but if one of these things is slightly off then not having a seat at the table can start to feel like a real issue. If you would like to join a firm where you have a voice and are heard, we can help you explore your options. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻-𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 - 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁? It’s the role of a General Counsel to provide and promote an efficient and responsive legal service to their internal stakeholders. But if there are no clear performance metrics in place, there is no business case for continued investment in the legal function. What’s the best way to demonstrate your in-house team’s value to the business? This was the theme of our latest General Counsel roundtable event, the third in our Legal Operations series. We were honoured to have Chris Fowler, Legal COO at Rio Tinto, share his insights both from his current role and his previous career, which includes nearly more than 20 years in various senior roles at BT. For those running large institutional in-house legal teams, there were four broad areas of advice. High salaries, 0%/low income tax, beautiful beaches – while enjoying top-quality work? Perhaps it’s time you thought about a move offshore to an attractive location such as the 𝗖𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀, 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗱𝗮, or the 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀. With a legal system originating in UK common law, and requiring lawyers to have a Commonwealth qualification to practice, working offshore in this location offers an easy transition for UK, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and Irish lawyers who are looking to spend a few years in the Caribbean. There is demand for 3+ PQE lawyers in investment funds, corporate, banking and finance, litigation/insolvency, private client and trusts. We have some candidates who accept new positions because the money on offer is much better, and we have some candidates who accept roles where the remuneration is lower than other offers. Some candidates accept offers based on the rapport they have built with the partners during the interview process, and some have turned down offers having done some more research on the behaviour and reputation of the interviewing partners. One thing we always do at Marsden is listen to what our candidates want at the outset, and we match that with what a particular client can offer. Towards the end of a process, and —hopefully one where our candidates are holding multiple offers—we hit playback and remind our candidates what they told us at the outset were their aims, goals, and desired outcomes. Sometimes, during a protracted interview process or where a candidate is meeting multiple firms, it is easy to lose sight of the initial goals and a playback option is vital.
