Yesterday, Logistics UK and members went to the Senedd and held a meeting with Natasha Asghar MS, Welsh Conservative's Shadow Minister for Transport. The purpose of the meeting was to obtain cross party support for the logistics sector in the Welsh Parliament. The areas that were discussed included: + The need for Wales to have a freight and logistics plan, with deliverable outcomes. Logistics has a key role to play in delivering sustainable growth in Wales. The Welsh government needs a partnership with logistics businesses to unlock investment and enable the sector to maximise the benefit it can deliver to the economy and communities – and the Welsh Freight and Logistics Plan is central to that. + For there to be innovative and integrated transport infrastructure, with Wales playing a key role in a UK logistics network. Wales is in need of high quality, integrated transport infrastructure to enable the delivery of goods in the most productive, strategic and green way, and to link Wales to international markets. + The logistics sector is committed to playing its part to help achieve net zero and recognises its responsibilities. However, the sector is equally clear this must be a fair transition that keeps costs down and supply chains resilient. + The logistics sector needs strong skills partnerships to help it thrive and deliver resilient supply chains that can adapt for the future. To ensure businesses have a strong pipeline of talent to draw from and nurture, careers in logistics must be backed by effective skills strategies, increased skills funding and a sustained commitment to attracting people into the sector. Following the meeting, Ms Asghar attended a transport update debate from the Cabinet Secretary later that day and reminded the Senedd that the logistics sector is key to maximising growth, efficiency, and output for Wales. Ms Asghar also asked when the logistics sector could expect a Welsh freight and logistics plan. The Cabinet Secretary responded to say that Welsh government will be publishing this plan this year and they are working with the sector to make sure the plan is fit for purpose. Logistics UK will continue to support Welsh Government in publishing this plan.

That's a wrap then on another fantastic week of delivering transport manager refresher training to Logistics UK member Veolia Three great venues this week. Bexleyheath, Waltham Cross and the last one pictured below, which has a distinctively Mediterranean feel to it, but is, in fact, The Crown Plazza at Gerrards Cross......and after watching England win while there I did manage to get my 'Gerrard is no longer cross, just slightly miffed' gag in. It was amazing to meet some of the most knowledgeable, engaged, and motivated transport professionals around, including some familiar faces from my transport manager CPC cohorts (all first-time passes of course😉). Our mock PI went down very well with delegates, no doubt in part down to some Oscar-winning performances from Mike Jones, Michael Colbourne and Es Shepherd CMILT Well done to all the winners of our interactive knowledge check quizzes which were all competitively contested and high-scoring. Investment in CPD is so important in our industry and the depth of knowledge that these teams demonstrated is proof of just that. Special thanks to the two Mike's for their hospitality and camaraderie, see you all soon.

To realise fully the potential of Northern Ireland’s economy, we are urging the Northern Ireland Executive to develop and deliver a NI-specific logistics strategy. In our new report “Logistics: underpinning Northern Ireland’s economy”, we highlight the significance of the sector to the economy and identify five key areas where we believe the NI Executive must focus attention to drive sustainable growth: unlocking investment through public-private partnerships; innovative and integrated infrastructure; a fair transition to a green economy, addressing the skills challenge, and growing trade by building on easements under the Windsor Framework and maximising Northern Ireland’s unique selling point and market access to Great Britain and the EU. *Dangerous Goods Awareness Day 11th July 2024* The British Association of Dangerous Goods Professionals (BADGP) along with Logistics UK and many other organisations including the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, are making people aware of the potential hazards of dangerous goods that are present in everyday items as well as what is being moved on the highways across the UK. Dangerous goods are used daily, both within homes and on an industrial scale. They form part of everyday items like your mobile phone, detergents and perfumes, in some cases we eat and drink them. In 2022, one in 20 vehicles in the UK carries dangerous goods, which equates to 85 million tonnes. 57 million tonnes (67%) of this are flammable liquids (UK Government Statistics, 22 June 2022). Dangerous Goods awareness day is about raising awareness about the everyday goods that are carried in our vehicles and preventing an incident from happening. Having this day will help promote good practice in handling, storing and transporting these substances in such a way as not to cause further harm or damage. Logistics UK's Member Advice Centre (MAC) has produced a special factsheet that is available to all members, please contact the MAC for your FREE PDF. What are ‘Dangerous goods'? Dangerous goods come in all shapes and sizes. They may be pure chemicals, mixtures of substances, manufactured products, or articles. They can be liquids, gases or solids and even the articles that contain them. Dangerous goods pose a significant risk to people, animals and the environment if not properly handled when in use or being transported. The UK is governed by The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009, referred to as the CDG Regulations. This in turn implements the Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road, known as ADR. ADR is a multinational agreement aimed at safe transportation of dangerous goods products on road networks all around the world. Over 50 countries have signed the agreement. The agreement covers the products carried, the containers and the vehicles used to transport them. Find out more about Dangerous Goods Awareness Day here: https://lnkd.in/eJU_5SNP
