Pictured is the HUT team at the Final Showcase hosted by Solus. It was a great evening to celebrate the hard work our trainees have put in over the last nine months. Thanks again to everyone who has contributed and supported the programme over the last year and a special thanks to Jamila Saha who has been a brilliant part of the HUT team! Applications are open for next year’s Build The Way C.I.C programme, until the 28th of July. Build The Way is offering nine traineeship placements to young Londoners at a selection of different Architecture Practices in London starting in October 2024. Each trainee is paid the London Living Wage for a 32-hour week, with an additional 1 day a week spent at the London School of Architecture completing their EPQ. With no experience-based barriers to application, places are offered to those who can show a passion for design and cities. Specialising in the design of places to live, work and play, combining areas of expertise in urban re-invention projects
About us
HÛT make places to live, work and play that are sustainable not just in terms of their embodied and operational energy, but also in their broader social context. 4 key ideas are embedded in all HUT projects; Re-use, Delight, Patina and Enrichment All of our projects are transformative in their programme, and are approached with an open mind to create the most appropriate response to the brief. Many involve a response to existing buildings, are in some way mixed use, retrofit, and located within the urban grain, We work towards low carbon and embrace the circular economy, reducing waste through the inventive upcycling of sites, building uses, and materials. Ours is a diverse, design-centric and democratic studio environment. We support local schools, lecture at Universities, and engage in place-making within our broader community. We actively encourage young architects from disadvantaged backgrounds and are signatories of the Waltham Forest Career Programme Pledge and Mayor of London’s Diversity Pledge. We have enjoyed working with a wide range of clients over the last 20 years; from individuals to pension funds, local authorities and estates, and many enlightened investors and partners.

Partial completion of works has taken placed at Challoner House, ready for the owner-occupier client to move into their new offices. The works entailed the refurbishment and retrofit of a Victorian warehouse introducing sustainable innovations in the form of breathable internal insulation to existing walls, biodiverise green roof, PV panels and new higher performing timber sash windows. Working closely with the client’s house style we created contemporary interventions within the historic fabric, including a sculptural hanging staircase linking internal office spaces, a two storey ‘town hall’, and a reinterpretation of the original butterfly roof which was lost from the building in the 1950s. The full scheme will offer an additional two tenanted office floors on the second and third floor, scheduled for completion later this month. Render by Dan Fisher

We’re proud to announce the completion of Mainframe; an eight storey, 109,000sqft CAT A central London office scheme delivered on behalf of our client Arax Properties. Mainframe sits in the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter and on the doorstep of Euston’s regenerating transport hub and moments from KX. The building provides industry-leading tenant amenities including extensive End of Journey and wellness facilities, communal roof garden + pocket terraces. The scheme has also already attracted some exciting technology businesses as well as noteworthy retail and leisure deals with GAIL's Bakery, Pizza Pilgrims and 1Rebel. Placing sustainability at its core throughout the project lifecycle, the project team successfully delivered ambitious sustainability accreditations including EPC rating ‘A’, BREEAM Official ‘Excellent’, International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) ‘Platinum’ and WiredScore ‘Platinum’. + Project Management & Employer’s Agent – Radcliffes Construction Consultants + Main Contractor – Think Inside + Strip-Out Contractor – KpH Group + CAT B Main Contractor - PACT + Architect – HUT Architecture + Building Services Engineer – Hilson Moran + Cost Consultant – Core Five + Structural Engineer – Heyne Tillett Steel + Sustainability Consultant – JAW Sustainability + Fire Engineer – Affinity Fire Engineering + Planning Consultant – Daniel Watney LLP + IT Infrastructure Consultant – Zetta Connect + Branding Consultant - SAENTYS Interested in learning more about everything that Mainframe has to offer? One of HUTs earlier projects, Pentonville Road is still looking pretty majestic on this prominent corner in King’s Cross. The project completed over ten years ago has aged fantastically well, through the thoughtful specification of materials. The penthouse floor is designed to reflect the ever-changing sky and the rooftops of its neighbours. Back in 2013 this building won a prestigious NLA award. Photos by Jim Potter

Introducing ‘Textures of Clerkenwell’ displayed in the Solus showroom ⬜️ It was great to see so many familiar and new faces last week at the Build The Way C.I.C x Solus showcase. Thank you to everyone who came and helped to create this installation that took many days to build from scratch! I learnt a great deal about the basics of turning architectural ideas, into designs that are able to stand, and are sensitive. 🏛️ In my piece, each tile represents textures and features of an important historical site in Clerkenwell. On one side, this texture is carved out in clay, and on the other it is reimagined through recycled samples in a more abstract form. The tiles are then attached to wooden rods, and hung in a timber frame. I have avoided any paint finishes and used screws so it is easier to recycle this piece once done, and think about the piece as a cycle. My time at HUT Architecture and the The London School of Architecture has taught me the importance of being careful about our surroundings. I hope to raise awareness of our sample waste, so we can all think together about a more sustainable way forward. I also hope to experiment more with the transition from natural colours we often use, to bolder colours that can create a big impact when used intentionally. Photography by Christopher L Proctor

Such a fantastic evening last night with Build The Way C.I.C at the end of year showcase, celebrating this years BTW trainees Iman Yasin, Jamila Saha and Zanib Naveed. A great way to round off 9 months of work in practice and at The London School of Architecture ahead of embarking on the next steps of their careers. Working with the 3 trainees to deliver the showcase meant I was very proud to see the payoff of all their hard work and it was great to see each of them sharing their experience with friends, family and professionals. It’s been a privilege to be part of this amazing programme with shedkm working alongside other likeminded practices GPAD HUT Architecture Morrow + Lorraine and I’m looking forward to meeting next years growing cohort! Thank you to Solus for being excellent hosts and continuing sponsors and advocates of the BTW programme. Thanks to Maz Weineck, Stephen Setford and LAB-083 for your time and help with prototyping and fabrication.
