What are the key #climate priorities for the new UK Government? Our Chief Executive Emma Pinchbeck shared her thoughts on Carbon Brief's webinar yesterday 👇 “The really big swing factor internationally on whether or not emissions start declining is largely around the deployment of renewables and them beginning to bite into demand for fossil fuel,” says Emma. “We need to see a massive roll out of infrastructure of the kind that we haven’t seen for the past decades.” Watch the webinar: https://lnkd.in/eTCFS_aV Simon Evans Molly Lempriere Adam Bell Camilla Born MBE #MissionPossible

🟢 Energy UK responds to the Chancellor’s green light for onshore wind projects. “It’s excellent to see the new Government prioritise planning reforms as a key enabler for economic growth and enhancing our energy security,” says Energy UK’s Chief Executive Emma Pinchbeck. “Unblocking the planning system, removing the de-facto ban to double onshore wind and ensuring adequate resourcing for planning authorities are crucial steps the industry has long been calling for.” 🖱️ Read Energy UK’s full response: https://lnkd.in/evg4u_wg 👈 #UKEnergy #NetZero #OnshoreWind #EnergySecurity

🗳️ With a new parliamentary term right around the corner, we’re looking back at highlights in the energy sector from the last five years👇 🚚 From the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the sector came together to support UK households. In addition to providing direct support for energy bills, the energy sector supported the country by using its vehicle fleets and workforce to deliver medicines and essentials. 💷 At the height of the energy crisis, we called for urgent support for energy customers. This took the form of the Energy Price Guarantee, which capped bills at £2,500 a year for typical households, alongside additional support for businesses. 📋Last year, the Energy Act was passed by the UK Government – the first in around a decade - containing a significant number of policies we called for. This included a #NetZero duty for the energy regulator. 💡The Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) was launched to help keep Britain’s lights on in periods of high electricity demand. The DFS in winter ‘23-'24 saved 3700+ MWh of electricity. 🔌The world’s largest wind farm, #Hornsea2, came online in August, 2022. The project generates enough electricity to power more than 1.4 million UK homes per year, with a total capacity of 1.32 GW. The #DoggerBank offshore wind farm also moved through several stages of development. When built, it will have an installed capacity of 3.6 GW and will be capable of powering up to 6 million homes annually. ⚡Over the last 5 years, the UK’s grid has regularly set new records. 2022 was the UK’s highest year on record for low-carbon electricity generation, with 138 TWh of generation. In 2023, 28.8% of the UK’s electricity was generated from wind power, and 4.8% came from solar. Emissions in 2023 are less than half of what they were in 1990, totalling 385m tonnes of CO2e compared to 811 million tonnes of CO2e. Saving the equivalent weight of 4 million blue whales in CO2e. 🛑Finally, the UK has almost entirely moved away from coal power. According to National Grid, coal was responsible for only 1% of electricity generation in 2023 compared to 43% in 2012. At Energy UK, we’re pushing for a sustainable energy sector where everyone receives excellent services at affordable prices and infrastructure powers the low-carbon economy. We want UK industry to be both successful today and able to invest for tomorrow. #UKEnergy #EnergySecurity
