Updates

  • July 4th 2024. An important date in history in the UK and the USA. It will also go down in history as the date that Bradfords were thrilled to announce their return as Yeovil Town Football Club Main Sponsor for the 2024/25 season. New Dawn, Old Partnership, Reignited. Bradfords are back in front!   COME ON THE GLOVERS! 👊 Hats off to our Head of Marketing Paul Malloy for pulling it all together!

  • Bradfords has only been able to reach the grand old age of 254 thanks to the communities in which we operate. We believe in doing right by them, and being an active part of each of our communities across the South West. In 2024, we expanded this with a new scheme, the Material Difference fund. This was set up to directly respond to local needs and our branch passions with what we do best – providing building materials. The Material Difference funds provide local community organisations with the materials they need to renovate or improve community facilities.  Through supplying those needed materials locally, we’re able to have a direct impact on our local communities, helping to make sure that invaluable facilities are in a fit state to support as many of the local community as they can. Since launching the fund, we’ve already been able to support 7 local community groups across the South West, including: 🐒 Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary in Looe: the Liskeard branch provided timber, guttering and cement mix for renovations to the monkey enclosures at a much-loved local attraction, which also supports young conservationists to cut their teeth in the sector. ⚽ Maiden Newton Youth FC: the Dorchester branch provided building materials to refurbish the football club’s community centre. Who knows, we may have played our part in finding the future Jude Bellingham from Maiden Newton! 🌳 Fordhaven Scout Hall: our Glastonbury branch supplied decorating materials to the scout hall, which had fallen into disrepair. The hall frequently operates as an engaging and safe space for children and families to reestablish, repair and maintain relationships. Thank you to all our teams who have identified and coordinated this support for their communities. We look forward to continuing our community support efforts during the second half of this year. #CommunitySupport #MakingAMaterialDifference

  • Our Head of Sustainability Giles Bradford has written about our four pillar sustainability strategy for Builders Merchants Journal, and the shared barriers we face as an industry in decarbonising. Read the piece here: https://lnkd.in/eMDVFkEZ #Decarbonisation #SustainableConstruction

The Builders Merchants Journal has generously described Bradfords as “Pushing the boundaries” on decarbonisation in this headline (see page 4 of the supplement!) https://lnkd.in/eiuHeeAf   I’m too modest, and aware of some of the truly groundbreaking work going on elsewhere in our sector and beyond, to not feel a little uncomfortable at the compliment. But it got me thinking. About the boundaries. The reality is that we’re pushing against the boundaries. Decarbonisation is fundamentally a change management exercise, and we all know the barriers to change that exist.   Our industry tends in the main to be furiously resistant to change, and we are operating in an uncertain market in which commercial sensitivities rule and where regulatory changes to support sustainability are perceived as a burden rather than an opportunity.   Our approach recognises the role we play as suppliers of building materials in facilitating the sustainability strategies of our supply chain. But it has also had its fair share of challenges.     We are proud of our strategy and our four pillars:    👥 Representation, to ensure our and our customers’ voices are heard.  🏢 Operations, to reduce our direct impact and walk the walk.  🏗 Proposition, to provide the low carbon solutions of tomorrow. 👩🏫 Education, to ensure we can help those building in the South-West to make informed decisions about the material solutions they choose.  Recent discussion during a panel debate at the Builders Merchants Federation Ltd Sustainability forum reinforced the facility of the builders’ merchant to be the conduit for this, and it is abundantly clear that across our sector it’s this last pillar, education, that holds the keys to catalysing decarbonisation. People will not sell or use solutions which they are not confident about.   As I say in this piece (with the overly generous headline!), the Bradfords approach is to share our experience across decarbonisation and our sustainability journey as a whole and to welcome conversations.    Only by being open about the boundaries and barriers, as well as the benefits and opportunities, can we progress collectively. Do get in touch if this has sparked any thoughts. #SustainableConstruction #Decarbonisation
