SIAC and Institutional Arbitration course at NUS | 26-29 September 2024 Arbitral institutions are important stakeholders in the field of international arbitration, but the nature and importance of their role have often been overlooked. The SIAC and Institutional Arbitration course seeks to introduce participants to the role and function of arbitral institutions in guiding and shaping the practice and development of international arbitration, and to the complex issues that arbitral institutions face in the administration of arbitrations, including, among others, the appointment of arbitrators and the issuance of arbitral rules and practice notes. The Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) held its SIAC Tokyo Conference on 3 July 2024 in Tokyo, Japan. The conference themed “Strengthening Ties and Resolving Disputes Between Japanese and Indian Companies” brought together leading international arbitration experts from India, Japan, and Singapore to discuss strategies for enhancing corporate partnerships and effective dispute resolution between Indian and Japanese companies. Highlights included a Keynote Address by SIAC Court Member Darius J. Khambata, SC, titled “Why Rule of Law Matters to Arbitration,” and a Fireside Chat featuring SIAC Board Member Cyril Shroff and SIAC Court Member Hiroyuki Tezuka, exploring the evolving investment and disputes landscape in Japan and India. SIAC Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Chinese Bar Associations of Shanghai, Jiangsu and Shandong The Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) is pleased to announce that it has entered into respective Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with the Shanghai Bar Association, Jiangsu Bar Association, and Shandong Bar Association to promote international arbitration as a preferred method of dispute resolution for resolving international disputes. SIAC was excited to be back in Jakarta, Indonesia from 10-13 June 2024. Together with YSIAC, we organised the Jakarta Workshop 2024 titled ‘The Art of Cross-Examination’ on 11 June 2024. Hosted by Assegaf Hamzah & Partners (AHP), the event opened with remarks from SIAC CEO, Gloria Lim, and SIAC Court Member and Senior Partner of AHP, Eri Hertiawan. The workshop featured a mock cross-examination, with the Tribunal helmed by Siraj Omar, S.C., SIAC Board Member and Managing Director, Dispute Resolution, Drew & Napier LLC, Herman Jeremiah, Senior Partner, Dentons Rodyk & Davidson LLP, and Andi Kadir, Senior Partner & Head of Dispute Resolution Practice Group, Hadiputranto, Hadinoto & Partners. The workshop concluded with a panel discussion and a networking session.
