How does the dramatic decline in sea ice affect biodiversity? Our Centre joins an international team to explore this in the Weddell Sea, a critical hotspot of Antarctic life. The project aims to establish a baseline for long-term monitoring. "As a researcher, it's thrilling to unite scientific knowledge with stakeholder expertise on this remote ocean," says Centre researcher Susa Niiranen. Learn more: https://buff.ly/3Wj6dKZ

Connecting hunting or fishing to environmental virtue might seem controversial. But under the right conditions, these activities can help people connect deeply with their local ecosystems, fostering wise and responsible stewardship of nature, argues a new perspective piece in Nature Sustainability. "Stewardship emerges when people understand the impact of their actions and commit to sustainably managing animal populations, including limiting how many animals they take and how they do it," says Centre researcher and co-author Erica von Essen. We are excited to announce that C40 Food Systems C40 Cities, a global network, was awarded the Food Planet Prize, the world’s biggest environmental award, on June 28 in Stockholm, Sweden. C40’s Food Systems Network works directly with its 50+ member cities from around the world to make it easier for residents to eat food that is good for people, the planet, and prosperity by developing healthy, equitable, and accessible food systems that also reduce food loss and waste. Through the C40 Good Food Cities Accelerator, 16 cities worldwide are working to deliver sustainable food policies and achieve a «Planetary Health Diet» for all by 2030, informed by the EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet, Health. These cities collectively serve over 500 million meals. Though every city is shaped by local context, good solutions can be quickly scaled and refined to suit other cities facing similar challenges. The cities participating in the Good Food Cities accelerator are Stockholm, London, Paris, Milan, Barcelona, Oslo, Copenhagen, New York City, Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles, Lima, Seoul, Quezon City, and Tokyo. Our congratulations!

🌎 It’s time for a Giant Leap: 71% in surveyed countries believe that the world needs to take immediate action, within the next decade, to reduce carbon emissions. Only a small minority believe slower, delayed action is required. The Earth for All 2024 Survey conducted by Ipsos and commissioned by Earth4All and Global Commons Alliance reflects widespread public concern on inequality and climate action, and backing for tax reforms and broader political and economic reform. Today, hydrological cycles are increasingly interconnected across larger spatial scales, sometimes even globally. This calls for rethinking how we study and govern water to enhance resilience and sustainability, argues a new study in Nature Water. Governance bodies often struggle to address significant human-induced changes in water systems worldwide. For example, deforestation in one country can reduce moisture recycling and alter rainfall patterns, impacting agriculture in distant countries. The study suggests improving coordination among existing governing organizations, strengthening resilience capacities, and expanding their mandates to effectively manage our interconnected water systems.
