🌼🤝 The first Saturday in July every year – which is today – has been designated by the United Nations as International Day of Cooperatives. As an agricultural cooperative with roots going back to the early 1900s, Lantmännen wants to highlight the significant role that cooperatives have played in the development of the society we live in today. 🌱♻ And with sustainability as a core part, cooperative businesses will continue to be crucial for society and for the planet in the future. 🌍 Cooperatives build a better future for all. At Lantmännen, every member has a voice. All members share in the company's profits. All members also have the opportunity to influence how Lantmännen is governed. 🌻🚜👩🌾 Our purpose is clear – to create a thriving agricultural sector. Through our business model, we create conditions for long-term, profitable, and sustainable Swedish agriculture. 👨🌾🤲 We also support other agricultural co-ops. For example, through the aid organization We Effect, we support the local cooperative Mumberes Farmers, which in turn is part of the association BAMSCOS in Kenya. 👉 Read more about our cooperative business model: https://lnkd.in/dEBCJZJU --- #Lantmännen #CoopsDay2024

🌾After last year’s historically poor harvest, among the worst in 30 years, we are now approaching a harvest that is the most important in a long time. Lantmännen's forecast for this year’s Swedish harvest amounts to 5.4 million tonnes of grain. That is to be considered as an average harvest, compared to the past several years. Summarized across the country, the very wet autumn, winter, and spring significantly delayed spring sowing. This was followed by early summer drought, which collectively has negatively impacted the spring-sown grains. The autumn-sown crops have managed the conditions better and show potential for normal yield levels. Sweden's largest crop, ley, has thrived very well in the moist conditions, and ley harvests are of good volume and quality in large parts of the country. 👉Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dDyJ9Xvu --- #harvest2024 #lantmännen #harvestforecast2024

Lantmännen’s forecast for this year’s Swedish harvest amounts to 5.4 million tonnes of grain. That is to be considered as an average harvest, compared to the past several years. 🌾🚜 “Delayed spring farming, combined with a wet winter and a dry early summer in large parts of the country means that this year’s spring crop harvest will be generally lower, while winter crops are developing better. In terms of quality for this year’s harvest, farmers have done what they can, but grain quality is largely dependent on the weather during the harvest period,” says Per Germundsson, Head of Grain Supply and Sales at Lantmännen Agriculture. Last year’s harvest of 4.3 million tonnes was among the worst in 30 years, and Sweden, which normally exports grain, has instead needed to import to cover its needs. Margins within Swedish agriculture are small, and a good harvest this year is critical for Swedish farming – but also for domestic food production and Swedish food preparedness. “Competitiveness and profitability in agriculture needs to be strengthened to cover the great need for investments, to manage the climate change, and to secure Swedish food supply. For example, investments of more than 50 billion SEK are needed in climate adaptation such as irrigation and drainage. That requires actions both in the market and in politics, since the profitability of Swedish agriculture doesn’t cover investments of that size,” says Magnus Kagevik, Lantmännen’s Group President and CEO. 🦅Birds play a crucial role in biodiversity, and supporting endangered species is a key part of Lantmännen's sustainability strategy.🌼🌾 To implement the right measures in the right places, the Real Estate Business Area has entered a strategic cooperation agreement with BirdLife Sweden, which shares knowledge about which bird species should be promoted, and where in the country.🦆🦉🦅 "Several different initiatives are now being implemented to promote biodiversity at our facilities – from flowering meadows and insect hotels to trees or birdhouses," says Henrik Nilsson, Sustainability Manager at Lantmännen Real Estate. The young peregrine falcon being ringed last week is born on the rooftop of our Västerås silo - where, for the tenth year in a row, a peregrine falcon has hatched. 👉Next in line is to build another nesting box for peregrine falcons in Hedemora (Dalarna province, Sweden), where Birdlife Sweden's working group Peregrine Falcon Sweden, together with the local bird association, has expressed a need for nesting sites for peregrine falcons in the area. --- #biodiversity #birdlife #sustainabilitygoals #birdnestingsite #lifeatlantmannen #ringed

Lantmännen Cerealia Norge AS has agreed with the Norwegian government to store 3000 tonnes of grain on behalf of the state. This first allocation of grain contingency marks an important effort to ensure Norway's long-term food preparedness. Norway is investing heavily in grain contingency and this is an important step in ensuring that the country is prepared for any future crises. "Ensuring access to food is central in all kinds of crisis situations, and we are therefore pleased that the government of Norway has made this key issue a priority," says Karen Huffman, Managing Director Norway at Lantmännen Cerealia. "We are proud to be able to contribute to strengthening Norway's food preparedness; we have already been an active player on this matter in Finland. As for Sweden, there is a need to start making decisions and show decisiveness to build up Swedish food preparedness. We stand prepared to contribute with our knowledge and capacity," says Per Arfvidsson, Executive Vice President and CTO at Lantmännen. 👉Learn more in today's press release: https://lnkd.in/dwW5cEDR

Europe's increased focus on sustainable food production and Sweden's need to strengthen food preparedness have contributed to a new momentum for Swedish agriculture. “After Swedish milk production has declined for several decades, there is now a new belief in the future in the industry", says Åse Arnbratt, Head of Farm Sustainability at Arla Sverige. “Through the collaboration at Farm of the Future Viken, Lantmännen and Arla want to contribute to the entire industry's green transition", Claes Johansson, Head of Sustainable Development at Lantmännen, continues. The work will be broadened to also include other important areas for future milk production, such as animal welfare, land use, carbon sequestration and fossil-free inputs to develop future milk production and live up to climate and environmental goals. 👉Swipe the carsousel and learn more in today's press release: https://lnkd.in/gnvYE8Q6
