In the past week we've seen OpenAI release GPT-4o and Google release a new version of Gemini Pro 1.5, together with their new Gemini Flash model. The big news about these announcements is efficiency, speed and cost. Yay! 🐢 The challenge with GPT-4 has been its slowness - whilst it's a great model, it's so slow that I've had to rule out using it in several situations. If you need to make multiple calls to the model (very common) and you have a user sitting waiting on a response, GPT-4 is not viable. Why is it slow? Because it's a large model and larger models use more compute and take longer to respond. 🏎️ Enter GPT-4o, which is much, much faster. Why is it faster? Because it's a better optimised model that uses less compute and is able to respond quicker. And it's cheaper - 50% of the cost of GPT-4-turbo. When you make lots of calls to a model, a 50% cost reduction is a big deal. ⚡️ Now let's look at Google. Gemini 1.5 Pro and its stablemate 1.5 Flash both bring significant optimisations: "1.5 Pro, despite using significantly less training compute, surpasses 1.0 Ultra, a state-of-the-art model, on text capabilities like math, science and reasoning, code, multilinguality and instruction following. Similarly, 1.5 Flash outperforms 1.0 Pro, despite being more lightweight and efficient." 💸 Emphasising the importance of faster, more efficient, cheaper models, Gemini Flash is a new class of model explicitly designed to address these requirements. Because often we need something that responds quickly and costs less. When I say costs less, Gemini Flash is around 1/10th the cost of Gemini Pro. 🔥 But Google's not done with Flash as a smaller, more efficient model. The Gemini Technical Report also talks about a further model, Flash-8B, which is still under development. It's an even smaller model, optimised for uses such as large-scale data labelling and high-throughput agents, where speed and cost are major drivers. Of course Flash-8B is smaller and not as good as 1.5 Pro, but it's probably *good enough* for a whole class of uses. Not everything requires the most sophisticated AI available. 👉 These new models may not have set the world on fire with dramatic new capability leaps, but they do set *my* world on fire with faster, cheaper, more efficient models. They use less energy, they generate less CO2 (remember, we have a climate emergency), they cost less to use and they respond faster. If you need high-end capability then GPT-4o and Gemini Pro 1.5 both push the envelope on capability. This feels like the advancement we need - the option to pay more for better models, or pay less for more optimised and faster models.

The movie 𝐻𝑒𝑟 was released in 2013. It's a science fiction about a lonely man who falls in love with his advanced AI operating system. This was during the early days of my PhD in #AI at the University of Amsterdam, and at that time the advanced AI in the movie seemed like pure fiction. It was around this time when the whole AI research community realized the power of neural networks after Alex Krizhevsky, Ilya Sutskever (ex Open AI co-founder), and Geoffrey Hinton achieved groundbreaking results in the ImageNet challenge, outperforming the second-best by 10%. This pivotal moment led everyone to embrace deep learning and neural networks, even though no one understood how they really work. A decade later, while we still don't entirely understand how deep learning AI models work, we benefit from extraordinary computational resources and enormous amounts of internet data. These advancements enable AI networks to learn and understand far more than any single person could process or store in their mind. Witnessing the progress in AI is truly mind-blowing. 🤯 The movie 𝐻𝑒𝑟 is now a reality. You can talk to your computer just like a friend, therapist, tutor, or colleague. 🖥️🤖 These are pivotal times. Those who start learning and adopting AI will be the ones who advance the fastest and succeed. 🦾

In today's tech-driven world, software development has a surprising impact on our environment. 5 Dutch Startup Failures: Key Insights Here are 5 key insights on the root causes for the failure of prominent 5 Dutch startups: 1. Yippie! - Grew too fast without the proper infrastructure, made some classic corporate mistakes according to the founder. Likely lacked focus and strategic direction. 2. Printr - Bet big on a 3D printing platform before consumer adoption was ready. Overestimated market demand and consumer interest in adopting 3D printing tech. 3. Tinker Travel - Business model not viable long-term. Pricing was too low to be profitable, took on significant liabilities with taxi companies. 4. Red Tulip Systems - Great idea but lack of funding to see it through. Needed more capital to fully develop and bring the product to market. 5. Cocoon - Pivot shows merits of the platform but initial model failed. Reacting and adjusting is good but failure was likely due to poor market validation and testing of assumptions. In summary, the main root causes seem to be lack of strategic focus/direction, failure to validate market demand, underestimating costs/liabilities, and not having sufficient capital to fully execute. I emphasized that while AI shapes the future, it does not solely determine the trajectory of our lives and businesses. Rather, it is up to us to reimagine what our lives and businesses will look like in five years and to start taking action today.   An essential point to consider is the role of AI in decision-making processes. Effective decisions should combine #AIpredictions with #humanjudgment. This approach not only leverages the predictive power of AI but also values the nuanced understanding of humans. Ultimately, we retain #decision-making #power because we, not AI, are the ones who live with the #consequences. Open AI launched a new model ✨ >> It’s called GPT-4o “Ok, Enzo, yet another model?” Not really ❌ With 4o, AI is becoming more human. It can respond to audio inputs with an average of 320ms.  Precisely the average human response time 😉 It can access images, text & audio. Like your eyes and ears do 💋👂 It also speaks multiple languages. Like that friend who can speak 6 🇬🇧 🇪🇸 🇮🇹 🇩🇪 🇨🇳 🇯🇵 Many people are scared about AI... replacing humans. Or think AI is limited to completing 'basic tasks'. And in some sort it is. But what if AI was the opposite? What if AI could get humans & computers closer? 😱 And close the gap that has existed. Since the first computers were created 👾 If you're a techno-optimistic, then it's hard not to see that. It's hard to see how AI can't be a step forward. Towards natural human-computer interaction 🤝 It's also hard not to see the use cases for those who need it most. What partially, but only partially, makes a difference is the origin. While Co-pilot originates from an office application, OpenAI was a research project, Gemini was a background search engine, and Meta.ai was a social network. 𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭? To gain or maintain dominance, a War of Talent rages among the tech giants. According to Business Insider, Mark Zuckerberg personally reaches out to AI researchers from Google DeepMind to poach them. Acquisition policies have been relaxed, with Meta even hiring applicants without interviews. Sam was immediately hired by Microsoft after his dismissal from OpenAI before returning as CEO. Elon Musk responded with salary increases to prevent his engineers from being poached. "The driving factor is a severe shortage of high-level AI talent." It seems like you can’t go anywhere without hearing about Generative AI nowadays. Rather than video, pictures, or sound, I normally work with Large Language Models which are trained from large amounts of public text. These LLMs can be used to summarise documents, generate documents, and run chatbots. It is this last thing that I am most interested in: chatbots for business use. Imagine this scenario: CHATBOT: Welcome to the Acme Company Website. How can I help you today? USER: Well, I want to learn how to use the Acme Alpha Widget? CHATBOT: For information about the Alpha Widget I have a manual pdf and also a training video. USER: How do I shutdown the Widget Alpha Widget? CHATBOT: In order to shutdown the Alpha Widget you must first check that no one is using it. Then you initiate the shutdown proceedure by executing this admin command... Full article on Medium.
