Hurricane Beryl leaves Texas without power

It is just the beginning of this year's hurricane season, but we already have a new pencil scratch for our doorframes. Hurricane Beryl marched across our city July 8, killing at least 13 and knocking out power for 2.26 million customers. Beryl hit as a Category 1, the lowest on the hurricane scale.

Beryl makes landfall in Texas as Category 1 hurricane Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Matagorda around 4 a.m. Monday as a Category 1 Hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm strengthened through Sunday evening and had maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour when it came ashore.

The category one storm dealt the city disastrous damage. Houston's first direct hit from a hurricane in decades showed how vulnerable the nation's energy capital remains.

Beryl slammed into southern Texas as a Category 1 hurricane Monday, knocking out power to more than 2.5 million homes and leaving at least eight people dead in Texas and Louisiana.
