Following many requests for a translation of my original article in Italian for "Il Mulino," here is an English version; thanks also to Monica La Selva, who helped me revise the original. Several considerations of this article can support Josef Aschbacher effort for ESA commercialisation activities and the debate around the next #EU #SpaceLaw. The Italian government has a unique opportunity to foster a robust and innovative commercial space industry. By leveraging both general legislative frameworks and sector-specific regulations, we can facilitate the consolidation of existing commercial entities and the emergence of new ones. This strategic direction, supported by adequate financial resources, aims to adapt regulations to the dynamic changes within the space sector—a hub of significant technological and market development transformations. Moreover, the legislative framework must guide towards non-incremental innovation, opening new avenues by revolutionizing the value chain. This necessitates a shift in mindset and a greater risk appetite from national and European space agencies. By correctly interpreting these changes, we can not only enhance our national industry's competitiveness on the global stage but also attract increasing levels of private capital into the space sector.
