For over 2 years now, we, at the DDB Mudra Group have been on a conscious journey of #unlearning and #learning about everything that’s unfamiliar to us. We started with the admission that ‘We Don’t Know Sh!T’ and today, over 37+ training sessions and 50+ hours of conversation, have evolved to making a conscious effort to be open and accepting of those around us. Keeping to our commitment to meaningful inclusion, this June, we chose to #Reflect, #Educate, #Empower and #Celebrate! We looked at some of the best advertising efforts depicting the LGBTQIA+ community, learning from what was done beautifully and acknowledging the distance we have to travel to truly represent the community for who they are. We created a forum for our people to speak of their favourite queer characters from pop-culture and what makes them special - a light-hearted discussion but profound in its simplicity. With the intent of turning the tables on the audience, we brought together a stellar panel of 4 people - Shreya Shetty, Gaurav Gupta, Rohini Bothra and Amit Kekre. They have, for a long time now, lent their time, energy and heart to the LGBTQIA+ cause and continue to do the amazing work they do every way they can. They asked questions and we had to dig deep to find answers - the resulting conversation was spontaneous, honest - an absolute joy to witness. And finally, true to our DNA, we ended the month on the note of learning something more with Apurupa Vatsalya, a Sexuality Educator. She busted some myths, taught us to be ok in our awkwardness and assured us that as long as the intent is real, it is ok to show up as an ‘imperfect ally’! The four sessions came together like a jigsaw puzzle, rendering nuggets of wisdom in different shapes and sizes and reiterating to us and others that there is a long way to go but it isn’t impossible, if we try.
