    This recent study delves into the efficiency of BSF larvae in converting waste products, with minimal environmental impact, highlighting the significance of selective breeding in optimizing BSF production. The study takes a crucial step in defining a breeding goal by estimating the economic values (EV) of traits essential for BSF larvae production. Traits such as larval mass, feed intake, growth rate, and composition (dry mass, protein content) were analyzed to determine their impact on profitability in a BSF production system. Key findings reveal traits related to composition and growth hold the highest economic value, emphasizing the importance of targeted breeding strategies. This study marks a significant milestone in developing a more refined breeding program for maximizing BSF production efficiency.     It was a great pleasure to attend #Insecta2024, the international conference on #insects for #feed, which took place in Potsdam, near Berlin, Germany last week. We had the chance to meet with many friends and industry leaders and learn more about the future and trends in this rapidly evolving field. Here are some of the key takeaways and hot topics discussed: ๐‚๐ก๐ข๐ญ๐จ๐ฌ๐š๐ง ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: We learned that chitosan can be derived from BSF chitin sourced from prepupa exuviae, pupa exuviae, and dead flies. This versatile biopolymer has promising applications in the cosmetics industry, vegetable preservation, storage and packaging methods, and water treatment. ๐‘๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  & ๐๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐Ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ข๐ณ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: The importance of maintaining the health and stability of a colony, efficient waste digestion, and specific nutrient ratios for targeted growth is becoming increasingly understood. There is a growing recognition of the need to separate breeding and rearing processes, as each has distinct requirements. Additionally, artificial selection is being utilized to develop new genetic lines, enhancing the overall efficiency of BSF farming. ๐Œ๐ข๐œ๐ซ๐จ๐›๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐ž ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐œ๐ก: Significant research is being conducted on the microbiome, highlighting its importance and the potential of antimicrobial substances found in the fly. This area of study could unlock new benefits and applications in the industry.
