Please take a look at Montel's comprehensive report on the factors contributing to extreme energy prices in Finland. Rapid renewable energy growth is also bringing along challenges. Particularly worth noting is the number of negative price hours in 2023 in Finland - 467! It is undeniable that flexibility will be needed in the future - both in demand and production. #hydropower #flexibility

We are celebrating a new PPA: Alcoa’s aluminium smelter Lista in Farsund municipality will receive a total of 2.600 GWh from Statkraft over three years, starting in 2025. Why is this a reason to celebrate?   📈 High energy prices make it difficult for industrial companies to produce at competitive prices. ↕️ Fluctuating prices, as we have seen over the last years, increase uncertainty in the calculation of final product prices. ✅ Through our power purchase agreement, we fix a price at a competitive level and support Norwegian industry in their ability to plan and offer their products at competitive terms in the market – now and in the future.   This agreement is made possible, among other things, through a tax change that came into force this year in Norway. We as a producer are now able to offer shorter PPAs to power-intensive industry, where the resource rent tax is not based on the spot price, but on the contract price entered into.   I thank the team who made this possible: At Statkraft, Originators, Portfolio Managers, Risk Managers and many other front- and back-office functions work together to make these contracts become reality for our clients, and I am proud to be working with such innovative colleagues. Today had a presentation at Montel Group's Finnish Energy Day. I was given a topic "From coal to SMR. Transforming the energy supply of Helsinki" Our journey from coal to SMR can be seen very simply as changhing one technology to other. But reasoning is more complex and so is the journey as well. We have lived decades in fossil economy. It has quaranteed fairly steady and low energy prices. Climate change mitigation urges us to end the fossil economy era, but that does not happen without systemic change. At the moment new investments to power sector are directed to wind energy and solar power, and that results very volatile power market price. Volatility have considered not to be desirable and many misses the good old days with steady marketprices. Volatility is not a problem rather an opportunity! Our aim at Helen is to increase our flexibility cababilities via technology (like batteries), also better balancing our own production and consumption (electrification of heating brings huge potential) and digitalization (opportunities in treading and customer interface). But how about SMR's. Those we need in 30's when we aim to phase out combustion-based energy production by 2040.

Investments into green transition and new green economy can provide a substantial boost to Finnish GDP and welfare. We have all the right cards in our hands, but need a reform in power markets to ensure the availability of clean and reliable energy for customer needs. Kärnfull Next (KNXT) today announces a new candidate site for a small modular #nuclear reactor (SMR) campus in Valdemarsvik. The large coastal site in Östergötland is part of the company's Re:Firm South #SMR program, aiming to provide clean firm power to southern Sweden in the 2030s. KNXT has signed an exclusive partnership agreement with Latona Group for the exploration rights for nuclear power on the Valdemarsvik Målma 4:9 (2) property. The ongoing study, expected to be finalized after the summer, has shown promising preliminary results and includes areas identified as suitable for #NuclearEnergy as far back as in the 1970s, including in Centrala Driftledningen’s report "Location of Large Coastal Power Plants" from 1972. We have today published our Q1 2024 report. While the year started well, the first quarter turned out to be severely impacted by the political strikes in Finland. Safety performance, measured as the total recordable incident frequency rate (TRIFR) improved further and amounted to 1.2 in the first quarter of 2024 (Q4/2023: 1.3; Q1/2023: 1.8). Despite Outokumpu's strong focus on safety, an unfortunate contractor fatality took place in San Luis Potosi, Mexico while a contractor was working at height. Full measures were taken to investigate the incident jointly with the authorities and improvements were taken across sites. Outokumpu had not reported any fatalities since May 2017. We continue to work on safety and have now deployed a third AI-enabled robot – latest addition to our team Jokkeri working in the Ferrochrome business area. Now altogether three robots across the company ensure that the exposure of employees in hazardous areas is significantly reduced. 📈 Green investment is key to Finland's higher GDP pathway ! A new study by Oxford Economics has interesting findings. In 2024-2030, investment in green infrastructure and technology will rise by €22 bn. By 2030, GDP will be 2.9% higher than the Baseline in the climate leader scenario, with total fixed investment 9.5% higher.  In the study, it is estimated that Finland will export 14 TWh of clean power in 2035. In the climate leader scenario, Finnish emissions will be net zero by 2035. #electricitymarkets #greentransition

Very proud to see that our unique value proposition on sustainability can also be pertinent in Scandinavia to recycle gen 3 spent fuel - almost forever. How much is the storage of spent fuels? ☑️ We provide a storage service for 20 years for national utilities thanks to our Stellarium, while producing a lot of power, and while preserving the plutonium asset, a source energy that can be renewed for centuries thanks to our iso-regeneration in house. ☑️And we have the reactor that is the most suited to destroy long life waste / minor actinides to drastically reduce deep storage space and maybe stabilize forever the necessary geological space needed to manage larger fleets of reactors? Very fast neutronic technology to fix most of the long life fuel waste issue.

For all the fans of nukes: the recent weeks of persisting negative prices in Finland are mainly due to Olkiluoto 3 coming online at full capacity at a time when hydro production is also peaking due to abundant rain and snow: like for RE, nuclear-generated energy is NOT flexible and the cost of idling an EPR the size of Olkiluoto 3 are such that it is preferrable to generate electricity at a loss than sustaining the ramp-down / ramp-up costs. Yet another confirmation that nukes and RE are fundamentally INCOMPATIBLE with each other.
