Simcenter STAR-CCM+ 2406 has now been released! One of the new features in this release is the Particle Agglomeration model, which enables dynamic bond formation between particles and between particles and boundaries. The animation demonstrates this model in a wet granulation simulation, where wet powder mixing is simulated using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). Particle-particle bonds form only when specific criteria, such as particle wetness and contact duration, are met. Additionally, the simulation incorporates a bond damage model to account for the breakage of larger agglomerates. CFD Simulation of Screw Compressors! 🛠️🌀 🔬 In a recently animated visualization, the intricate dynamics of a 4-6 screw compressor with SRM profiles are showcased. Featuring a main rotor with a 300° wrap angle and 102 mm outer diameter, alongside a gate rotor slightly smaller at 101.2 mm, this compressor operates with a meticulous design to enhance efficiency. The rotor length measures 168 mm, while the axial gaps on both the suction and pressure sides maintain a precise 100 µm. 🔄 Utilizing TwinMesh 2023, the fluid regions surrounding the rotors were meticulously pre-generated for every 2° rotation, producing a single deforming mesh of approximately 1.4 million nodes. This advanced meshing facilitates a detailed analysis of the air and oil flow within the compressor, which is crucial for optimizing performance. 🌡️ The operational setup employs air treated as a calorically perfect ideal gas and incompressible oil at a density of 800 kg/m³. Conditions are set at 1 bar and 20°C at the inlet, with a discharge pressure of 3 bar. The compressor's main rotor spins at a swift 6000 rpm, pushing a theoretical volume flow rate of 86.5 liters per second. 🔧 The multi-phase simulation, crucial for predicting performance and efficiency, integrates a homogeneous model where gas and oil share a common velocity. This simulation aids in accurately tracking phase distribution and temperature uniformity across different components, ensuring the system's reliability under varying operational conditions. 📊 On the animation's display, viewers can observe pressure variations and oil distribution on rotor and stator surfaces.
