🏗️ Two new office towers in Downtown Toronto feature in this image by #UTForum contributor mburrrrr. The closer one, the North Tower of CIBC SQUARE at 141 Bay Street, presents its colourful construction elements on the left of the image, including the blue screen doors for a pair of construction hoists, red fencing, and yellow weather protection. Behind it, a pair of window washers have been hoisted by the building maintenance unit high above the sloping roof at 160 Front West, a new office tower in the midst of opening, that apparently needs a bit more spit and polish somewhere on its exterior. https://lnkd.in/eQ3n8_w2 #Toronto #architecture #construction #development

💡 💚 BC Embodied Carbon Awards shine a light on excellence in climate smart building design: https://bit.ly/3Y3GJCp 🔗   These awards put a spotlight on trailblazers who work hard to lower embodied carbon pollution in BC. 👷 🏆 Team RJC is proud to be a sponsor.   We are thrilled to see student housing at North Island College taking home the WIN in the large building category. 🎉 This award goes out to a new development or renovation with an outstanding, low-embodied-carbon design & construction.   Designed by HDR Architects, this North Island College complex will be a campus first. 🏫 📚 🤓 Set to open in 2025, these two residence buildings will be the first onsite living spaces in the college's history. RJC is the structural engineer & sustainability consultant for this ambitious project in Courtenay, BC.   The exciting development features a Main Building for student housing & a Family Building to support the needs of students with families. 🏗️ 👨👩👧 The creative design is complete with a community space for lounging, gathering & studying.   To keep embodied carbon low, wood was used where possible, with preference for dimensional & engineered lumber. 🪵 🙌 Wood-framed shear walls will also be used to resist high lateral loads on Vancouver Island. Congrats to our fantastic project partners & all the award winners! ✅ Canadian Architect magazine #vancouverisland #buildingscience #structuralengineering #wooddesign #engineeringproject #embodiedcarbon

How it started vs. how it's going at RJC Montréal! 💪 👷 Check out these team snaps to see how much our Québec presence has grown over the years.   When our Montréal office first opened in June of 2020, it was a one-person show. Today, after moving to a larger space downtown, our Montréal crew stands strong with a bright group of over 15 talented RJCers. 🎉 Let's go team!   This dynamic squad has already had a chance to collaborate on some of the most exciting projects in the city. 💼 ⚙️ If you're a local, you may know their work from peer reviews on these buzzworthy feats: 🏙️ Skybridge condos, a $730M mega-project featuring the tallest residential tower in the city 🏒 Tour des Canadiens 1 & 2, a 50-storey condo tower paying homage to Montreal's legendary NHL team, just steps away from the Bell Centre 🏊 Exterior pools at Fairmont Tremblant #montrealquebec #condos #highrisebuilding #constructionlife #engineers #engineeringconsultancy #engineering

Happy Stampede, Calgary! 🤠 🏇 🥞 The world's largest outdoor rodeo calls for a hearty breakfast.   Our Calgary RJCers had a blast kicking off the fun by flipping pancakes for hungry crowds of stampeders.   Take a look at highlights from the 64th annual Stampede Breakfast at Cadillac Fairview's Chinook Centre. 🍽️ 📸 Team RJC had so much fun that we came back to do it all over again at CF's Market Mall breakfast on Tuesday (July 9). Sponsoring these cowboy breakfasts was more than just a great time for the team. 🙌 🤍 These fun-filled events also support charities that work hard to improve our communities. The CF Chinook Centre partners with the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation, while CF Market Mall supports Ronald McDonald House Charities. #calgaryalberta #calgarystampede #engineeringlife #engineers #engineeringconsultancy #corporateculture

Would you walk on a glass floor 900+ feet above ground? 🚶♀️ 🌄 This stunning reel by pro videographer Calin Charles takes you to the Columbia Icefield Skywalk. The CIS opened its doors a decade ago in May 2014. Since then, the glass-floor walkway has been one of North America's best tourist attractions. 🇨🇦 🙌 It overlooks a 280-metre drop with some of the best views in Alberta. Team RJC is always excited to make award-winning projects like this come to life. 👷 🏗️ We were the project's prime consultant & structural engineer, bringing our creativity & expertise in structural glass design & bridge engineering. To help the structure blend with all the breathtaking nature, our engineers collaborated with Sturgess Architecture. 🌲 🛠️ 🚞 Together we identified corten steel, a type of weathering steel, as the best structural option. This material's chemistry is known for forming a protective layer over itself as it rusts. The result is a gorgeous design that can be left exposed outdoors, no problem! 😍 From the very first rendering for a design competition to its opening day, our team loved the challenge of this project. 🤝 Project Partners: PCL ConstructionSMP Engineering (Electrical)Sturgess Architecture 📍 Sunwapta Valley, Alberta #structuralengineers #bridgedesign #structuralsteel #albertacanada #engineeringconsultancy #glassdesign

📷 CIBC SQUARE's second tower in Downtown Toronto can now be recognized by anyone passing by, as over the last several weeks the signature glazing has been applied to its lower tower floors, identifying it as the virtual twin of the first tower. In this image by #UTForum contributor Amare, the north tower's concrete elevator core is followed by the steel structure of the floors, weather protection where its concrete floors are being poured, then eventually the glass. In the front right, the completed south tower stands over Bay Street, a staircase riding from the sidewalk in front of it to the park bridge that will span the Union Station Rail Corridor between the two. https://lnkd.in/eFR9i5mN #Toronto #construction #architecture

REMI Network explores office-to-residentail conversions with RJC Principal Paul Fritze, P.Eng. ✅ Here are 5 considerations that could make or break your project: https://bit.ly/4cPZMV6 🔗 🧑💻 With the rise of remote work, office vacancies are soaring. Naturally, building conversions have emerged as a potential solution for owners & developers who want to capitalize on their properties. 🏢 👉 🏡 Although attractive, this option isn't without its challenges. “When income statements yield dramatically lower revenues, the excitement to pivot & convert unused office space into residential apartments is warranted,” Fritze says. “But not all vacant buildings are a good candidate for this opportunity.” One Scarborough shelter renovation stands out to Paul as a shining example of when it makes sense to convert. Located at 4117 Lawrence Ave. East, the project called for redeveloping a two-storey commercial space into a 90-bed homeless shelter. This will support the City of Toronto's ongoing strategy to create more permanent shelter beds for the community. Paul's team worked to renovate the building, transforming offices into a shared living space for bedrooms, dining, community programming & healthcare services. RJC was the Prime Consultant for 11 disciplines on the project. We also provided technical design services for the structural, civil, building envelope & roofing components. In partnership with Homes First Society, this new facility will bring critical emergency shelter & support services to people experiencing homelessness in Toronto. Take a look at the renderings for this thoughtfully designed community space. #officetoresidential #homelessshelter #officeconversion #structuralengineers #buildingenvelope #engineers
