Agriculture faces a crisis: Collapsing soil health, Declining biodiversity, Stagnant crop yields, Rising temperatures & drought conditions. In response, there is growing interest in Regenerative Agriculture as a solution. This has led to a convergence of different agricultural approaches, all under the banner of “Regenerative Agriculture”. This can create confusion and fueled debate over its effectiveness and applicability in different contexts. While some practices are widely accepted as beneficial, others like permaculture and holistic grazing, are more contested. This paper explores the concept of “Regenerative Agriculture”, focusing on its origins, definitions, and its potential, and discusses its effectiveness in tackling those key agricultural issues.. The authors’ observations leave us with these context-specific questions: 1. What is the problem to which Regenerative Agriculture is meant to be the solution? 2. What is to be regenerated? 3. What agronomic mechanism will enable or facilitate this regeneration? 4. Can this mechanism be integrated into an agronomic practice that is likely to be economically and socially viable in the specific context? 5. What political, social and/or economic forces will drive use of the new agronomic practice?

Dutch Greenhouse Farming: Balancing Energy Use with Agricultural Efficiency During the recent GreenTech horticulture trade fair in Amsterdam, demissionary Minister Piet Adema of Agriculture, Nature, and Food Quality highlighted the integral role of greenhouse farming in the Netherlands. While acknowledging the sector’s significant energy consumption, Adema emphasized its high added value and productivity, crucial for a small and densely populated country like the Netherlands. High Efficiency and Productivity Greenhouse farming in the Netherlands is renowned for its efficiency and high yields. The ability to grow crops on multiple layers within a controlled environment allows for optimal use of limited space. According to Adema, this makes greenhouses an invaluable asset, especially given the country’s limited agricultural land and the pressures on natural resources. “Despite the energy consumption, the high added value and proximity to large markets make greenhouses indispensable to Dutch agriculture,” Adema stated. This sentiment is echoed by the statistics showing that greenhouse horticulture contributes significantly to the Netherlands’ agricultural output. The sector produces a wide range of crops, including vegetables, fruits, and flowers, with an estimated productio...

🌼 Wageningen University & Research goes... fashionable? 🤔 Well, yes! WUR, G-Star RAW and Dutch cotton BV have jointly developed a pair of trousers made entirely from cotton grown in Dutch greenhouses 👖 Cotton is an easy crop to grow, but it requires a lot of agricultural space and can need up to 10,000 litres of water to produce 1 kilo of cotton 💧 Additionally, cotton cultivation depends on a specific warm climate, making cotton fields the starting point of a long and complex supply chain to the consumer. There is a great global demand for responsibly grown cotton. The current project aims for the most sustainable clothing production possible. “Cotton cultivation in greenhouses results in a production increase of five to 23 times and significantly less water usage (95%) thanks to the reuse of (rain)water 🌧 Additionally, no chemical pesticides have been used,” says researcher Filip van Noort. 🌱 For six months, research was conducted at the greenhouses in Bleiswijk. The research focused on the quality, yield, and fibre properties of cotton, and compared the environmental effects with traditional cultivation methods. Precision irrigation and biological control were among the methods examined to reduce the environmental impact. The economic viability and market potential were also analysed. Despite the advantages, there are still hurdles to overcome. For example, the initial production costs are too high, making greenhouse-grown cotton currently not economically viable. Further improvements and scaling up are necessary to make ‘home-grown denim’ economically feasible in the future. Greenhouse-grown cotton will not quickly replace conventional cotton cultivation. However, Van Noort sees potential in a niche market for such sustainable products. The growing demand for environmentally friendly and ethically produced clothing can stimulate the market for greenhouse-grown cotton, especially among consumers who value sustainability and transparency in the production chain ♻ 💡 Additionally, such projects can offer valuable lessons for traditional outdoor cotton cultivation. “By experimenting with new, more sustainable cultivation methods in greenhouses, researchers and growers gain new insights that can be applied to improve the overall sustainability and efficiency of cotton cultivation, both in the Netherlands and worldwide,” says Van Noort. #greenhouse #horticulture #cottoncultivation #sustainability #supplychain

The organic farming movement with 4,5 million organic farmers worldwide needs a strong global organization. IFOAM - Organics International has been that organization for 50 years. In December 2024 we will hold the Organic World Congress (https://owc.ifoam.bio/) and the IFOAM General Assembly in Taiwan: https://lnkd.in/dnQnjN2s. I encourage organic leaders to attend (see conference tracks here: https://lnkd.in/dz9-xteU). For my own part, I will be running for re-election to the IFOAM – Organics International World Board. When I first ran for the WB in 2021, I promised to work for three things: ✅ Strengthening our 800 member organisations worldwide in their work for organic policy, market development, fair supply chains and training of more farmers. ✅ Global and national policies that mobilize organic farming as a powerful tool in our work for food security, climate, biodiversity and rural livelihoods ✅ Economic stability and new partnerships for IFOAM – Organics International. I have kept this focus, together with our uniquely diverse World Board. We have made some gains, and all three goals are also pillars of our new IFOAM Global Strategy: https://lnkd.in/dMRdyVnX There is still a lot of work to do! Transformation in agriculture requires a combination of solid policy, market pathways and empowerment of front-line organizations leading in all levers of change. Together, these three factors change farmer mindsets and incentives, create and spread knowledge and increase influence of both smallholder farmers, communities, civil society organizations and progressive commercial actors in supply chains that together can make change. I treasure the diversity of our movement and on the World Board, and hope that I have member support to continue to fight for the organic movement, our members and allies. To my colleagues around the world I ask for your continued input and ideas about the challenges we face, and how our global organization best can help you in your work on the ground. Please message me or share your ideas here. I also extend my thanks to the organizations providing the required five letters of support for my candidacy: AOI ( Indonesia Organic Alliance ) TOAM TANZANIA ORGANIC AGRICULTURE MOVEMENT, Canada Organic Trade Association, Association of Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples’ Development and Canada Organic Growers. For those who are not yet members of IFOAM – Organics International, please join! More info here: https://lnkd.in/dcU8EGb And join us at Organic World Congress December 2-4 (pre-conferences Nov 30-Dec.1) and the General Assembly Dec 5-6. We will be publishing more information (registration, pre-conferences, calls, etc.) in the upcoming weeks. Not pictured from the World Board, Jennifer Taylor, USA.

🐮🌾 The gap between organic versus mainstream agriculture is closing. That is the experience of researchers Wijnand Sukkel and Gerard Migchels that they share in an interview with Resource - WUR university magazine. Migchels (dairy farming) and Sukkel (crop farming) recently wrote a report (in Dutch) together about the prospects for organic farming in the Netherlands. Migchels: ‘This report is about the prospects for organic agriculture in the Netherlands: what is the impact of expanding organic crop and dairy farming on the climate, nature and animal welfare. In organic farming, many emissions, such as CO2 and ammonia, are lower per hectare. But in mainstream farming, emissions of many substances are lower per kilogram of product because that sector produces more per hectare. The research question was to look at whether expanding the share of organic agriculture in the Netherlands to fifteen per cent would help the country meet its targets for reducing CO2 and ammonia emissions. And total emissions would indeed go down.’ The response to this report was predictable: criticism from the mainstream camp and praise from the organic one. Yet, the researchers observe there is less polarization and the two camps are closer to one another than in the past. 👉 Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/e5r2pbV6 #dairyfarming #organicfarming #livestock

♻️🏆 Kringloopwijzer nominated for the Impact Award! With the Kringloopwijzer, dairy farmers can demonstrate the environmental impact of their dairy farm. They can show society that they are making good choices for the environment, provided they score well on environmental indicators. The label ‘On the way to planet proof’ could not exist without the Kringloopwijzer. The reason for developing the Kringloopwijzer is that the Netherlands is a small country with a lot of cattle and milk production. Which results in a lot of manure. This forces us to be cautious with the environment. A broad consortium of partners contributed to the development of the Kringloopwijzer, not only WUR but also the feed industry, dairy industry and the farmers themselves were involved. The Kringloopwijzer exists for eight years now and it is impossible to imagine the sector without it. The dairy sector believes it to be such a good tool that it has been made compulsory since 2016 for all dairy farmers to fill it out. Talk about impact! The Impact Award will showcase five nominated teams sharing their successes. The Award will be presented to a team of WUR researchers that has distinguished itself and achieved tangible impact in the past years. ✔ Cast your vote: https://lnkd.in/enKBb6aJ 🔎 Watch the video: https://lnkd.in/eJXXT4Dx #livestock #dairyfarming #impact

The Belgian presidency of the Council has approved a set of conclusions on the future of agriculture in the EU, emphasizing the importance of research and innovation in guaranteeing food security in an open economy. The conclusions place farmers at the heart of concerns and underline the strategic role of agriculture in ensuring food security. They also recognize the need for a stable and predictable framework to help farmers tackle environmental and climate challenges. The conclusions stress the key role of agriculture in ensuring food security and strategic autonomy, acknowledging numerous challenges it faces, including climate change, geopolitical tensions, profitability, and administrative burden. The text recalls the European Council meetings in February, March, and April 2024, where EU leaders stressed the essential role of the common agricultural policy (CAP) and recognized that a competitive, sustainable, and resilient agricultural sector is a key strategic interest of the Union. The conclusions also emphasize the contribution and potential of agriculture in sustainable economic growth, urging for fair income for farmers and improved positions in the food supply chain. The conclusions call for the Commission to regularly update its assessment of the impact of free trade agreements on the agricultural sector and for member states to carefully assess the impact of EU enlargement to prepare the agricultural sector for this process. Research and innovation are crucial for ensuring the EU can produce sustainable, safe, healthy, and affordable food for its population. Funds complementary to the CAP play an important role, as do exchange networks and advisory services for farmers. Simplification and less red tape are also emphasized, with the Commission monitoring administrative burden sources and complexity for farmers while member states have a role to play in the simplification process. Support for young and new farmers is also highlighted, as they face difficulties when starting their businesses, such as accessing farmland or credit. The text concludes that measures are necessary to tackle these issues and highlights the role of generational renewal for the farming sector. Climate change resilience is also emphasized, as food security and a resilient EU agriculture sector depend on the preservation of ecosystems. The conclusions acknowledge that efforts to achieve the EU's climate, biodiversity, environmental, animal welfare, and sustainability goals need to continue while considering the competitiveness and profitability of agriculture.
