Bruce Bugbee, the late Dr. Marc van Iersel and their researchers are at the leading edge of plant and light interaction, working for years on establishing and quantifying key aspects of plant physiology and how to engineer and apply new lighting sources, like LED, for plant cultivation. Far-Red has been long known to have a “non-linear” effect in conjunction with red photons in the PAR range i.e. Red photons (600-700nm). This is well documented by Dr. Robert Emerson and the established “Emerson Effect”. In a nutshell, non-linear means 1+1=3. In that, the total effect photosynthetic activity gained is greater than the quantity of photons input. This journal advocates and establishes the need for an “extended PAR” range of 400-750nm versus the traditional 400-700nm. More recent publications which we will get to, also propose 350-800nm as an ePAR range. While the norms and understanding have shifted to include more of these photons out of range, the quantities and applications of Far-Red are still being debated and sorted in the plant science community. This is because Far-Red photons not only work on a physiological level, but also trigger plant response through Phyto chromatic activity which can cause beneficial or adverse effects depending on specific crops needs and responses to photons in this 700-800nm range. How much Far-Red is needed? Do we need Far-Red on independent channels for crop production or is that still in the Crop Science world only? #GandyGrows #FarRed #photons #photosynthesis #plantscience #horticulture #plantscienceconcepts
