“Rather than finger-waving...we need to think of all the factors that might get in the way of being able to read to a child, and then wrap support services around those families." Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) Professor Sharon Goldfeld AM has spoken to The Guardian about a new report into which Australian children are more likely to be developmentally vulnerable when they start school. The Changing Children's Chances report examined health, socioeconomic and geographic data from 300,000 children, finding that factors such as whether a child was read to at home and household income could help predict whether they would fall behind in key milestones. About us
Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) is Australia's largest child health research institute and is ranked among the top three globally for research quality and impact. Our team of 1,800+ researchers works across over 150 common and rare diseases and conditions affecting children and adolescents. From allergies and asthma, diabetes and mental health issues to cancer and rare genetic disorders, we are relentless in our pursuit to transform child health through research and give all children the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilled life. Our story began in 1986, when world-leading philanthropist Dame Elisabeth Murdoch and genetics pioneer Professor David Danks imagined a better future for our children and established the original Murdoch Institute for Research in Birth Defects. Since then, MCRI has grown from a genetics research institute to a global leader in child health. Our work also goes beyond research. MCRI is one of the only research institutes in Australia to offer genetic testing via our subsidiary, the Victorian Clinic of Genetic Services (VCGS), to find answers for families of children with previously undiagnosed conditions. Operating in a unique model with The Royal Children's Hospital and the University of Melbourne, MCRI is part of a great circle of healthcare and discovery – helping transform child health from the laboratories to clinics and out into communities.

A new report has found which children in Australia are most likely to fall behind in reaching key developmental milestones. Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI)'s Centre for Community Child Health examined the data of 300,000 children, finding that being read to less at home was a strong indicator of developmental 'vulnerability' (measured when children started school). Other risk factors included lower household income, parents’ or carer’s education level, if a home was rented or overcrowded and whether a child experienced mental health issues. But the data also showed that unpaid childcare acted as a protective element for families living in disadvantage. MCRI Professor Sharon Goldfeld AM said governments should consider how this data could be better used to inform policy and decision making. A new framework has been developed to help healthcare workers better educate families about genomic medicine. Two new studies led by Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) and Australian Genomics researchers Associate Professor Amy Nisselle and Bronwyn Terrill aim to improve genomic medicine education for healthcare professionals that will hopefully provide better health outcomes for children and families. Associate Professor Nisselle and collaborators have developed an evaluation framework that can be used across a range of educational programs and clinical settings drawn from 20 years of literature. What is the best way to prevent the spread of conflicting and misleading information about vaccines online? Murdoch Children's Research Institute's (MCRI) Centre for Health Analytics is examining how AI-based social media ‘bots’ can influence public opinion on vaccination and how to effectively target the most widespread misinformation. The team, represented by Dr Muhammad Javed and Gerardo Luis Dimaguila FAIDH, recently received a GSK Immunisation Award at the Communicable Disease & Immunisation Conference. The award prize will help them to further their research by recruiting a panel of experts and fact-checkers to build on their existing model. "This is a preventable health challenge that can be addressed almost right away. If Australian families are offered high-quality social, health and education services from the antenatal period through to the early school years, we can help break cycles of disadvantage." Murdoch Children's Research Institute's (MCRI) Professor Sharon Goldfeld AM has authored a piece in Croakey Health Media, highlighting how 'stacking' key services can help children and families. To make the concept of stacking work in Australia, Professor Goldfeld said there needed to be a 'fundamental shift' in how services are conceptualised, along with additional action from policymakers, service providers and communities.
