Our OceanOmics team continues to explore environmental DNA and deploy genomic technologies in the deepest regions of our oceans. Postdoctoral researcher, Dr Georgia Nester, and Research Assistant, Ebony Thorpe, are currently aboard Inkfish vessel RV Dagon mapping the biodiversity of the Tonga Trench - the deepest trench in the Southern hemisphere and the second deepest on earth. The work is led by Prof Alan Jamieson from the Minderoo-UWA Deep Sea Research Centre. Stay tuned for more great work from OceanOmics!

This morning, Sam Mostyn, a leading advocate for climate action, gender equality and First Nations rights, was officially sworn in as Australia’s Governor General. For decades, Sam has been a driving force in Australia’s corporate and civil societies, championing inclusivity, sustainability, integrity and compassion on behalf of all Australians. Over the past three years Sam has been an active and pivotal member of Women for Progress alongside our Founder Nicola Forrest. She has inspired and empowered us and many others with her ongoing drive to make a positive difference. Her generosity, curiosity and humility are well-known. She leads with respect and care, and her passion for fairness and equal opportunity shines through everything she does. On behalf of us all here at Minderoo, our heartfelt congratulations to Sam on her new role. We, Australia, and the Commonwealth are fortunate to have her determination, conviction and empathy guiding us in this next stage of our history. We also acknowledge the wonderful team at The Social Outfit who made Sam’s suit for today. The Social Outfit creates socially responsible, sustainable clothing collections by giving refugee and new migrant women the opportunity to grow and showcase their skills. This week we joined Deloitte Access Economics and Australians Investing In Women to launch Remaking the Norm – a valuable review of Australia’s outdated gender norms and the practical actions needed to build a fairer future. A follow on to the successful Breaking the Norm, in a room full of passionate and engaged advocates, our Founder, Nicola Forrest AO, delivered the launch event’s opening remarks noting her deep frustrations with the global gender inequality crisis. “We must accept that everyone has a responsibility for gender equality to become a reality – from corporate Australia and government to civil society and philanthropy. Systemic shifts are needed to break rigid gender norms and remake healthy norms if we expect things to ever be different. If we are to stand a chance, we must do it together." Gender equality must be a priority for all for the potential of all to be realised. Download the full Remaking the Norm: https://lnkd.in/gnjZhSg4

Today, we announced a secure and efficient package to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, aiming to help prevent starvation among 400,000 children.    The cornerstone, SafeGates, is a fast and secure proposal to enable the flow of aid into Gaza via three new automated entry gates equipped with high-tech scanning equipment and automated systems, underwritten by Minderoo and operated by a third party.    Developed in consultation with the Government of Israel and Palestinian communities, the plan addresses key logistical challenges identified by the UN, allowing for the delivery of 10,000 tonnes of food into Gaza daily via hundreds of trucks.    An additional US$5 million commitment will enhance the existing Jordanian Corridor supply chain with new warehouse facilities, more trucks operated by the Jordanian Armed Forces and additional aid supplies, accelerating aid flow into Gaza through a new collaboration with the United Nations Office of Project Services. Celebrating #WorldOceanDay with an incredible deep-sea discovery! A rare encounter with the hooked squid, Taningia danae, was captured on video during a research expedition conducted by The Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre in partnership with Inkfish. At over 1km underwater in the Samoan Passage, this amazing creature known for its bioluminescent "headlights," mistook the camera for prey and gave us an unforgettable show. Wrapping its arms around the camera, it allowed us to witness its natural behavior in stunning detail. Join us in celebrating the ocean's wonders and the groundbreaking research that brings these deep-sea marvels to light.

Introducing you to our new deep-sea friends on #BiodiversityDay!🌊 Our collaborations with Inkfish, The UWA Oceans Institute and Deep-Sea Research Centre have allowed us to shine a light on some of the ocean’s most enigmatic inhabitants, enhancing our understanding of these hidden ecosystems. 🔵Giant Larvaceans: These tadpole-like creatures demonstrate the ingenuity of nature with their mucus-made homes, showcasing remarkable adaptability and eco-friendly living in the ocean’s vastness between Hawaii and Mexico. 🔵Cirrothauma cf. magna - The Big-Eye Jellyhead: Our deep dive into the Pacific Abyssal Plains revealed the elusive Cirrothauma cf. magna, the largest known cirrate octopod, with well-developed eyes and a distinctive webbed body. 🔵Crossota Jellyfish: At depths of around 5000m, you'll find the stunning Crossota. These hydrozoans, with their varied species, remind us of the ocean’s profound biodiversity and ecological significance. As we continue to map and explore, we are reminded of the ocean’s vital role in our planet’s health and the need for its careful stewardship. We are immensely proud of our research teams and thankful for our collaborative partners. Together, we’re not just unveiling the mysteries of the deep; we’re advocating for the future of our blue planet.

The vibrant Nyinggulu Reef continues to be a driving source of inspiration and collaboration behind safeguarding our natural ecosystems. We were honoured to host US Ambassador to Australia, Caroline Kennedy at our Exmouth Research Lab last month to showcase the remarkable science conducted by our coral spawning team, James Cook University and The UWA Oceans Institute. As we continue to collaborate with partners globally, we’re reminded of the power of collective efforts in addressing pressing environmental challenges. Together, we’re paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient world. U.S. Embassy in Australia Shire of Exmouth

Australia is one step closer to having our first ever Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre after construction of the Minderoo Comprehensive Children’s Cancer Centre reached its highest point. To celebrate this, a topping out ceremony was held on Tuesday 30 April. As part of this ceremony and to honour a long-held tradition, a native Water Gum tree was lifted onto the roof of the new building. The Minderoo Comprehensive Children’s Cancer Centre will bring together Children's Cancer Institute and the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick Kids Cancer Centre to deliver integrated, specialist cancer treatment, education and research.
