💡 Our new paper "Multi-risk instruments for emergency response: a multi-hazard and multi-risk assessment of the European Union's Solidarity and Emergency Aid Reserve" published in Disasters discusses the evolution of the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) into the Solidarity and Emergency Aid Reserve (SEAR). SEAR now also includes public health emergencies, addressing diverse hazards with a unified fund. The study highlights the need for adequate capitalization to sustain the fund, suggesting that the current levels are insufficient. Our findings show that the recommended annual capitalization levels are at least EUR 1.587 billion annually, or EUR 2.127 billion including tail risks. The study suggests considering regional differences in hazard exposure to improve the fund's robustness and effectiveness. It calls for tailored capitalisation strategies to ensure resilience against both natural and health-related emergencies, advocating for a risk-based approach to funding and resource allocation across Europe. 👩💼The CLIMAAX project, co-led by IIASA scientists, is developing an innovative, hybrid approach to assess present and future climate risks, thus responding to the EU Mission Adaptation by supporting regions on their way towards #climate adaptation and resilience.

It’s an absolute privilege being a part of the MYRIAD-EU project and coordinating the research in the Danube Region. While we are slowly moving towards the final year of the project, I’m really looking forward to sharing our emerging insights!
